Do you know whether the kernel in etch supports device hotplug (i.e.
"yank the drive") for SATA?

kernels...

Not exactly the answer to your question but have a look at 3ware RAID
controllers, they show them selve as SCSI device to the kernel but have 2-8
hotplug-able interfaces for SATA drives so that the kernel does not have to
care about hotplugging.
