"When"? What are you doing? The only times I've had an "X is going to
crash" attitude have been when I A) had a really lousy motherboard or B)
was running the alpha-quality evil nVidia modules for X 3.3.6. In most
cases, X should Just Work, even if you're using fglrx. You should
provide details about your hardware and X config.

This should be done in your kdm/gdm/xdm config file. I don't know which
DM Xubuntu uses, so can't provide details. xdm's config is in
/etc/X11/ , split up into many small files. kdm's config is in
$KDEDIRS/share/config/kdm/kdmrc . Read your config file(s), check out
the comments, and set it up so that :0 .. :9 (whatever) are statically
allocated. That *should* make it work the way you want it to.

things got worse.
