Depends on the backlight.

Reducing the brightness of my 901's screen to "60%" from "100%" is a 0.2W
saving. Minimum brightness shows a 1W saving. Blanking it shows that the
display consumes approx. 2.6W.

Interesting.

I wonder what is taking all the power then.

Don't forget that you're not comparing equivalent products. One's a
recent laptop screen made with energy concerns in mind and (assuming
from it's size) a relatively old desktop screen which has no energy
concerns. Plus, there's a huge size difference 9" vs 15". My
trigonometry is very rusty now, but I'd guess that the area of the 9" is
probably ~1/3 that of the 15".

Exactly so.

I forgot to say that I didn't play with brightness settings on the
screen, just noticed that the somewhat elderly desktop rig (866 MHz P3
IBM NetVista) plus the flat screen draws 62 watts which dropped to 50
watts when I hit the off switch on the screen.

By comparison, the laptop I'm writing this on (Lenovo R61i) draws up to
30 watts depending on how busy it is, including the 1.8 watts used by its
power brick.
