Public Usenet server?

Is there a public Usenet server available inAustralia? I am just fed up
with seeing no new posts in active groups for a week at a time.

I will check Google Groups for replies - I have to.

There are no free ones.

Usenet is expensive to do, and free accounts get abused.

Spend 10 euro and get an account at news.individual.net

Motzarella.org is still free. But I suspect that due to your first two
points Wolf will give it away sooner rather than later.

There is also teranews who will give you a free 50meg per day account
for $1.

If you are not getting any new posts in active Ngs , then try deleting the
Ngs articles and headers and re-download the Ngs articles and headers
If the fails , then remove the entire list of Ngs and re-download and
re-subscribe to them.

It could be that iprimus may have had problems with their news server and
that the Ng article IDs my have been renumbered and the are out of sync with
your Ng article IDs.
Other then that , try the Pigpong news server , it can be unaccessable at
times but it has active Ngs.

Which groups? This last week I've had trouble with two ISPs and
alt.os.linux.mandriva.

Currently there are no such considerations, I can assure you.
As for a handful of abusers (out of a total of 3500 users),
I can handle these easily <veg>.

'Not in Australia', other than what might be provided by your ISP.
(You can't access news.{sydney,*}.pipenetworks.com?)

These are overseas, though:
dotsrc.org wants you to register, but is free afterwards.
sea.gmane.org has the quite handy gmane.* mailing list gateways

If you want to run your own local newsserver, I've got this old
hacked-up Perl script that runs through several feeds to ensure you've
got as complete a feed as possible. (I could even offer R/W access to
an APANA newsserver, although about to have an RL event make life busy
for me soon.)

I can access pipenetworks and I've been having trouble too.

Would that have advantages over running Leafnode with multiple
servers specified?

That is one. BTW, I said I would look under Google Groups. They don't have
aus.computers.linux at all. Probably they don't have aus.*.* because it is
local.

I am using Leafnode. Sometimes it does strange things, so I just deleted my
whole /var/spool/news directory, and uninstalled and reinstalled leafnode.
This changed nothing. Perhaps, as Peter says, it is the groups themselves.

that I am using at the moment).

And there was a lot on reader.news.telstra.net that I wasn't seeing on
news.hotkey.net.au (which is iPrimus.)

Yeah , it may be the Leafnode news server it self because most ISPs are not
really interested in maintaining their news service because only a small
percentage of their customers use the news service.

Generally deleting the whole news server account and downloading and
rebuilding the news group list will fix most news groups that don't show any
active updates.
