Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>networking (more info?)

I set up several work stations with
Fedora 11 (32 bit) last summer with no problems.
Then, as part of my Linux class some students
tried to set up the 64 bit version.
The system was unable to find the internet
interface.

To check up on this I tried loading the 64 bit
version on another machine where, again, the system
couldn't find the on-board internet interface.
I tried adding a SMS 10/100 card, but that couldn't
be found either.

I then backed off and tried to install a 32 bit
system, which couldn't find the SMS card.
Removed that. No luck. Reset the BIOS.
No luck.

Mother board is MSI. CPU is AMD 6000+ .
Interface is Realtek. (All new)

I am totally mystified. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

What's your criterion for "can't find?"

Does "lspci" not show the hardware?
Does "ifconfig -a" or "ip link show" not list a corresponding device?
