A Letter from Linuxland

,----[ Quote ]
| ....I don't know exactly what bit of Microsoft corporate madness
| finally provoked the allergic reaction that swelled my anger gland. It
| could have been Windows Media Player offering to 'protect' my content with
| a smarmy message that smelled as bad as 'Crusher' Nobbs offering to
| 'protect' a pub. It might have been Windows Genuine Advantage slithering
| its way into my PC and lobbing my personal information back to Microsoft's
| HQ without telling me. It might have been waiting two minutes for my
| computer to start while a large and massively stupid lump of antivirus
| software declared itself the most important being in my world. Or it
| might have been another stonkingly arrogant statement from Steve Ballmer
| -- you know, the man who's proud that he bans his kids from owning iPodsa
| nd using Google. There are many, many candidates for the last straw in
| the bale on this camel's back.
|
| Whatever it was, it was suddenly too much. I realised fully what I've
| actually known for 20 years -- I wanted to use my computer on my terms.
| I wanted to be part of a community, not some battery hen kept in my own
| ordure and fed god knows what to lay golden licensing fees. I didn't want
| to be part of Microsoft's world, not even one where someone else pays for
| my software. I wanted to have fun. I wanted out.
|
| There are two options for the escapee -- Macintosh and Linux. I like the
| Mac. OS X is an addictive shiny thing, the hardware is toothsome and if
| you can afford to join its gated enclave the lawns are well-mown, the
| security guys courteous and your fellow inmates stylish and bright.
| But I can't afford it. Truth to tell, I get a little scared by the
| evangelical chaps on the corner.
|
| Which leaves Linux.

Wrong again, as usual Roy. Rupert Goodwins has been writing for Linux
journals for years. He's not a "loyal windows user".

For example, not Rupert Goodwins in the Authors Hall of fame at LXer from 2
years ago:

http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/25036/index.html

As usual, you like to lie with your subject lines. How pathetic you are.

Don't get your panties in a knot, I think Roy is talking about users in
general, not just the author.

No, if he were talking about users in general, he would have used the word
"users" not "user".

He doesn't have to be, he's writing about mythical 'loyal windope users'.

groups in the 90's.

It was true then (OS/2) and it's true now.

http://worldcadaccess.typepad.com/gizmos/2005/11/2_grassroots_an.html

"Some years back, Microsoft practiced a lot of dirty tricks using online
mavens to go into forums and create Web sites extolling the virtues of
Windows over OS/2. They were dubbed the Microsoft Munchkins, and it was
obvious who they were and what they were up to. But their numbers and energy
(and they way they joined forces with nonaligned dummies who liked to pile
on) proved too much for IBM marketers, and Windows won the operating-system
war through fifth-column tactics"

They don't even deny it. Then again, what would you expect from people whose
profile says "occupation: geek". It's propaganda in disguise.

Best wishes,

Roy

This go well with the "mythical lienux user" who do not exist and the
"mythical lienux marketshare" that do not exist either. Nobody use
lienux except for a few loser nutjobs and IT departments. Lienux on
desktop is also "mythical"

Note that the trolls (this one in particular) will never post to deny or
challenge this accusation. Consent through silence.

Erik's position has been blindingly clear for many years, and it's quite
correct that he used to troll the OS/2 groups, too. It must be very
frustrating to be on the losing team now, so I don't really expect that
we'll hear all that much from him.

Bullshit. I've denied this accusation numerous times in this newsgroup.
I'm just not going to jump everytime someone makes the claim. Use google,
i've made my affiliations (or lack thereof) explicitly clear on more than
one occasion, so please spare me the "consent through silence" paranoia
claptrap.

He must have moved to the Windows advocacy group (I haven't checked this to
verify). He could use his familiarity with various platform to troll Windows
users for a change. There's plenty to use as flamebait when you have Vista,
WGA, viruses, antitrust and eavesdropping around. 'Nuff said.

Without a doubt, the activity of the Funkenbusch has declined an order of
magnitude since I first subscribed to this NG.

Best wishes,

Roy

Hmmm. Eric trolled the OS/2 newsgroups. OS/2 is now dead. Coincidence?
I don't think so. The truth becomes clear... Microsoft has unleashed their
secret weapon on Linux. Erik walks the earth! All is lost!

You know, I've seen a few Windows fans become Linux advocates that way.
They start out ripping on Linux, but the more they learn about it during
the arguments, the more they become secretly or subconsciously intrigued.
They eventually try it (perhaps telling themselves that it will help
them better criticize it).

They begin to have a grudging respect for it. They still defend windows
and occasionally rip on Linux, but it begins to taper off. Their heart
is no longer in it. Then they discover some cool thing about Linux
that they had not realized. They find some app they hadn't heard about.
They feel that sense of pride when they customize their system in some
clever or unique way.

They've caught the bug. They understand the feeling. Its like the
difference between driving the sports car you own compared to the rental
you don't. No need to keep shelling out to keep using it... you own it.
It's yours to customize, yours to upgrade or not as you see fit.

It's not Windows. It's different. Like anything, it has its good
points and bad points. The thing is, they now understand what those
are. They understand... and they've joined us.

Wink

That's great coming from a moron who posts through google with no previous
posting history - you do know what OS the google system you just posted
with runs on don't you, yes it's the very OS you claim no-one uses which
does little for your credibility.

Oh, he has a previous posting record.
He posted under several different nyms, to avoid killfiles
And he is still nymshifting

He is by far the dumbest poster in the last years to invade cola

I've been using Unix system for more than 15 years. I've been using Linux
off and on (and more regularly recently) since at least 96. I don't hate
Linux at all, especially not on the server.

On the desktop, I simply believe it's nowhere near ready for average use
and that the level of maturity of support is sadly lacking. For example,
not one single Linux vendor provides the kind of resource Microsoft does
via the MSDN and Technet.

Sure, there's a billion how-to's spread across the net, but this
informaiton is typically out of date, incomplete, distro specific, and
often times plain wrong. Not to mention you end up having to scour the net
looking for them (which is ironic considering all the bullshit Linux users
spew about having to search for drivers for Windows. I spend easily 1000x
more time searching for information about Linux than I do looking for
drivers for Windows).
