It's getting to a point where self-build might not be so tempting, as
linux offers real flexibility to the small PC build shops.

Are you suggesting that shops should line up some boxes, install MythTV in
'batch mode' and then deliver these as low-cost media centres? I think it's
already being done, but there's the peril which is advertisement and public
awareness. Most people judge by buzz (artificial buzz, not word of month)
and cost, not by merits.

I can still recall the time when my Supervisor said something along the lines
of "I guess you will say that you are using something free", the context
being a task which was hard to achieve. There are too many people who fail
to grasp that software is not a pair of socks that is produced from raw
material. Meanwhile, I continue to impress my Supervisor with the
capabilities of that so-called 'it's just something free' software.
