I think Sony may have a winner here. I don't want to lug around a
laptop and I don't want to pay a montly fee for Blackberry service, but
I do want to be able to access web email and the internet while I'm
traveling on a screen larger than available on cellphones. This tiny
device may fill exactly this niche. It has a real keyboard and a real
screen and connects to any free wifi hotspot (or a paid hotspot if you
must). I don't need PP3 music or photo display, but I'm sure those
features would be of interest to others.

320x240 screen resolution. Same as the Samsung i730. I'd really love
a 320x320 screen, like on some of the Palm Clie's, 320x480 would be
best but I understand that that will be larger than most people want to
carry.. I use my i730 for browsing, ssh, and ftp, and it works well
enough. Of course, the most important aspect isn't how great the
screen is, but simply that it is easy to keep with you. Still, the
difference between 320x320 and 320x240 is more substantial than you
might expect and would have really be great. |

As much as I would love to agree, I worry that handhelds that rely on
wireless, rather than be connected to a mobile telephone network, are
becoming obsolete. The following was published yesterday:
Lack of New Devices Contribute to Continued Decline of Handheld Market

The Mylo could, however, appeal to a niche or grab the market of those who
remain in the area. I notice that sharp has a phenomenal jump. They sell the
Zaurus which is Linux-based, though countries where these get distributed
are limited.

Hmmm... I do with my 320x320 screen the same stuff that I did back in 2002 --
simple PIM. I don't know why/how/if people require so much beyond this.
Reading and writing mail is hard with small screens, even if you have a
foldable keyboard. It's slow and cumbersome, so it's usually better to wait
until you reach a desk/laptop... unless, of course, you must travel a lot,
need good battery life, and want to carry nothing but a pocket-sized gadget.
Best wishes,
Roy
