Hi,

I installed VMWare Server and the DebianVirtual Machine. I'm running
in bridged mode.

While network access seems to be fine via Firefox the Synaptic Package
Manager, apt-get and Update Manager are not able to find files to
download.

Running sudo apt-get sharutils, gives me the following errors:

root@vmware-bavm:/# sudo apt-get install sharutils
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
sharutils
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 110kB of archives.
After unpacking 393kB of additional disk space will be used.
Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ breezy/main sharutils 1:4.2.1-13
Could not connect to us.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (1.0.0.0), connection
timed out
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/s/sharutils/sharutils_4....-13_i38
Could not connect to us.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (1.0.0.0), connection
timed out
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with
--fix-missing?

I get similar errors while running the Synaptic Package Manager.

Something does not seem to be right with the network.... I have tried
to ftp to various sites from inside an Xterm which works perfectly.
The Ethernet is in bridged mode, I am on a Windows XP machine which is
connected to the internet using a DSL router.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Looks like a DNS issue : us.ubuntu.com is obviously not at 1.0.0.0. I
have already see this on routers with broken DNS proxy. The problem
happened when IPv6-enabled applications sent an AAAA query and the
broken DNS proxy did not handle it properly.

Is the virtual host uses the router DNS proxy as DNS resolver, and it it
a D-Link router ?

Please report the result of the following sequence :
$ host -t a www.ubuntu.com
$ host -t aaaa www.ubuntu.com
$ host -t a www.ubuntu.com # yes, again
