Archived from groups: linux>redhat>rpm (more info?)

I'm looking for advice thoughts on best practices and real world
practices in multi-OS release rpm management. I maintain 13 different
Red Hat releases (RH 6.2 - RHEL 4) and one Solaris 10 w/RPM in our
environment and was wondering what is common practice with installing
and maintaining packages across OS releases. It is not uncommon to have
8 different packages that I would need to install if I wanted to use
the latest available for all releases. This seems like a management
nightmare and I'm wondering what others do in these circumstances.

I have no choice but to support these systems do to in-house
applications that will only run on the specific releases.

Comments, links to web sites or reading suggestions appreciated.
