mordor:~ % free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3839 435 3404 0 15 255
-/+ buffers/cache: 163 3675
Swap: 1999 0 1999

163 MB used. Not bad Wink

2 Gb for 64-bit Windows 7? IT here says you need 4 Gb.

Almost 8 Gb in use here.

Feed your Linux system! Feed it!

On fluxbox, it's about 250 MB, to start, and have rarely seen it go over 600
MB. I currently have 1.5 GB, and the swap is rarely used.

RAM is very cheap. I just increased my Intel QuadCore laptop from 4GB to
8GB and it cost me 30 dollars Australian.

Just do it. Everything works faster, especially Gentoo Updates! The
aggressive file caching of the Linux Kernel really speeds things up when
you've got the RAM to spare.

I like awesome a lot just because of that. Very minimal, and does just
that what a window manager should do: manage windows. And configured
properly it is one of the few window managers that actually *does*
manage windows; I rarely have to reposition a windows - it is all done
for me.

Everything!

Why leave gigs of RAM unused? It's faster than disk I/O! (I know you
know that. Even Microsoft knows it, sort of.)

Actually yes I can. It seems you are generalising. I dont think all
Linux users are cheapskates. But there are Linux cheapskates : sorry if
this is not clear to you. There are hordes of people who posts here who
equate "free" (as in beer) with "good". Oh get a life. Linux cheapskates exist.

Awesome has tiling, does it?

Fluxbox has intelligent window placement. It doesn't have afaik 'tiling'
as a dedicated function, however.

You can have fluxbox memorize the size, position, virtual screen
(workspace), the monitor (in a multi-monitor setup), stickiness, window
decorations, minimized/maximized state, fullscreen state, transparency,
shading status, and layer of each application that you like to run.

I don't know about other Linux desktop environments, but, for this kind
of configurability, Windows has nothing like it. (You may be able to
purchase third-party extensions that provide such capability. However,
I have found that stuff based on the crufty Windows console and
windowing systems suffers from being based on the crufty Windows console
and windowing systems.

Why not have an old-fashioned Christmas for your family this year? Just
picture the scene in your living room on Christmas morning as your children
open their old-fashioned presents.

Your 11-year-old son: "What the heck is this?"

You: "A spinning top! You spin it around, and then eventually it falls
down. What fun! Ha, ha!"

Son: "Is this a joke? Jason Thompson's parents got him a computer with
two disk drives and 128 kilobytes of random-access memory, and I get this
cretin TOP?"

Your 8-year-old daughter: "You think that's bad? Look at this."

You: "It's figgy pudding! What a treat!"

Daughter: "It looks like goat barf."

No, there's no comparison to Windows - Fluxbox has it for dinner, as far as
configurability goes. I meant that in comparison with awesome, there's no
'tile' command in Fluxbox, that arranges the open windows in a tile
arrangement.
