The Mac Mini is still the worse value in Apple's line-up for $400 more
you can get a 20" iMac which includes the keyboard, mouse, 20"
monitor, 130GB of extra hard drive space, a faster hard drive, an
extra 2MB L2 cache, a 128MB ATI Radeon versus integrated graphics,
firewire 800 vs firewire 400, 802.11n versus 802.11g,

What's the price? Are you assuming it is going to remain the same? Not sure
that's a good assumption as today it just became more expensive to own an
iMac.

but only about 12 times larger. Poor KDT, never understands the finer
details.

Why are you using the top end Mini instead of the entry level?

If you really *need* all this, you need something other than a Mini.
It's not all that likely that you're going to find a PC with all the
spec'd items you list for the same price as a Mini, is it?

Or... "Boy, that iMac is looking like a great deal!"

I'm really happy they did not kill off the Mini. It's great in a Mac
business environment.

Sure hope they go to the GMA 965 graphics board next time around. The
950 is looking pretty dated.

yeah, but it's still a pretty beefy machine for the price. no pc can
match it in size, quietness, price, software selection, etc. so Apple
once again has a category winner.

http://www.apple.com/macmini/design.html

the new pricing matrix (no tax) should inflow by tomorrow.

You do realize that I have a G4 Mac Mini connected to my HDTV right
now, don't you?

But it is still a horrible value for anything else besides an HTPC.
You really give Mac users a bad name.

If I didn't already have one, I would definately buy one for just
that purpose but I couldn't recommend it to anyone for any other
purpose. Even if they do already have a nice monitor, I would still
tell them to get the lowend iMac and use the monitor for nice dual
display setup.

Because that comes closest to the spec of the lowend iMac. If you go
with the lowend Mac Mini, you lose the DVD-RW, a little hard drive
space -- really not that big of a deal, I would add a Ministack hard
drive anyway, and a little speed.

a *good* USB Mouse $40?

I haven't worked on a computer with just one monitor for years. At
home my primary computer is a laptop with an external monitor with
monitor spanning and at work I have a desktop with a dual head video
card. I would connect the monitor and use the iMac in monitor
spanning mode. The only computer I use with one display is my Mac
Mini -- and that display is a 32" LCD HDTV. The Mac Mini is
basically only used for an HTPC.

I wasn't comparing it to a PC...I was comparing it to the much better
valued iMac.

Apple people are like spoilt children.

One week it's the iPhone "taking over communications".

Then it's completely forgotten and sudden it's the mac mini -- in
brushed aluminum!

No wonder the business community ignores Apple and is focusing on
Novell.

Well, when the moon's in the seventh house and
Jupiter aligns with Mars, things get very strange
here in COLA...

Smile

In any event, ideally everyone would be focusing on
Microsoft...and not in a good way. Apple in this context
is a bit of the underdog...but I am wondering what kind
of games we'd have to play under their rule, if they --
somehow -- top a certain Washington-based corporation.

It's as on-topic for this group as the PS3 posts of Roy and Mark--some
people do run Linux on their Mac Mini.
