Now when I start X, the bottom of the display "dances". If you
imagine the display from a graphic equalizer, you'll get the
idea. It doesn't do this every time I boot the system, and
sometimes it doesn't start until I maximize a previously
minimized window, other times it starts as soon as the desktop
opens.

Any suggestions?

Regards

Yep, patent it, sell 'dancing X' licenses. Wink

Or, disable Compiz, perhaps?

Hi
That to me would indicate the frequencies still aren't correct. In sax2
is you select a generic lcd at the correct size and frequency. Else
did it come with a cd with an inf file on it? Are you running vga or
DVI?

If you have to ask, you almost certainly didn't enable it.
Nevertheless, it's the Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm).

Malcolm's lede (frequency) looks more promising.

You are totally correct. I discovered the correct
frequencies by pressing the "setup" button on the monitor.
Doh!! Sax had got them basically right but fractionally over
and since adjusting them, X runs fine!

The only thing left, is that running in text mode looks
terrible. I think that's becuase the grub boot parameter
still has the VGA= setting from the CRT. I've tried
changing it by entering an invalid value at boot time and
selecting from the large number of options available,
without success so far. Since "setup" auto-magically
sets this value - is there a program I can run to
auto detect what the value should be?

Set the grub boot parameter to vga=normal (for a basic 80X25 screen).
