Archived from groups: linux>redhat>install (more info?)

I'm trying to install FC6 on a virtual machine (Virtual PC 2004). It boots,
starts to
install, then I get:
(0) Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task!

I've tried to install the VM on a separate drive and got the message,
so I tried to install on the C: drive with the same problem. I've tried the
suggestion of using a linux text install with the same result. I've tried
the rescue CD - no help. BTW - I tested all CD's with sha1sum and all was
okay,

I Googled the error and saw that other people had the error and were
referring to their CPUs, resolution, etc. - but that wasn't even consistent.
The interesting thing is that their 'solutions' gave instructions of what to
do after you have a successful install. (??) I posted this question on
another linux newsgroup a few days ago, but apparently no one is posting
there.

Please help.

Thanks,
Christina

Christina,

I do not know Virtual PC 2004, what hardware does it emulate.

I had problems with VMware server, when emulating scsi disks. On a ide
disk emulation FC6 and F7 run fine.

Hi,

I gave in and downloaded Virtual PC 2007 and it's installing now - seems to
be okay. I tried to install using the GUI, but it was unreadable, so
restarted and used linux text option. I'll need to edit the xorg.conf file
for 16bit after install is fiinished. Now I need to figure out how to
change the size of the window, since VPC only allows 800x600, but I'm
researching that.

Considered using VMWare Server, but saw that some people had issues with
that, so decided to 'go with what I know'.

Thanks for your input.

Christina,

system-config-display might help you with settings for the graphics.

Thanks,

The install crashed 15 minutes before it was done, so then I installed
VMware Server and put FC6 on it. Install went great, except now I don't
know how to 'map' Dreamweaver to a folder on the guest server for test
uploads. Thought there would be an choice in preferences (i.e. 'assign
drive letter to FC 6 guest'), hen be able to map to that letter. There's
probably something in the settings and I just can't find it, and I've
Googled and Googled with no help. I'm about ready to give up and pull out my
old box and reinstall a hard drive on it- not much space left under my desk,
though. Arrghhh.

Christina,

If you want to upload data to the guest, you need to configure samba.

edit /etc/samba/smb.conf

add something like

[dreamweaver]
path=/dreamweaver
public = no
writable = yes
printable = no
create mask = 0765

now restart the samba service

service smb restart

make samba start and stop when starting and stopping Fedora

chkconfig smb on

Now you can map a drive to the share in Windows, just like mapping a
drive to a Windows share.

Best regards,

Jan Gerrit
