I'm just kind of wondering...have they released any recent
patches/updates for Tru64? I was thinking of trying to get them to
release the Compaq C source code since a lot of the guys at Compaq/HP
Alpha team are now working at PA Semi:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/24/pasemi_power/
They're all in one place and someone might be able to point me in the
right direct concerning who to speak with. It would be nice considering
the Alpha is now defunct. To release the Compaq C code as a
goodbye/goodwill nature... Will L G |

Hello everybody
I've got a Multia, an AS1000 and a PWS 500 running Debian Sarge.
All others alphas running NetBSD and VMS.
Alpha Linux seems alive and kicking, but mainly in the hobbyist zone.
It would be nice to hear how many are still using Linux on Alpha machines
for business these days.
I could bet all Alpha installed base is running VMS and Tru64, and that
all who were running Linux have switched to x86
(or Sparc, or Power... maybe)
bye

Nice to hear you have several boxes up and running. I know when ever I
file a bugreport some place like Gnome.org or KDE.org, they act like I
was running a museum piece or something I do have to admit though,
rolling over to an AMD64 is pretty tempting... especially when I fire up

My home is someway like a museum for Digital machines
Some alphas, some vaxen, vtXYZs, but still not a PDP!
These days I'm trying to get the latest software running on my alphas,
(I'm upgrading to Debian Etch) so I could give you a hand for the
bugreports, at least to let them know we are two and more!
At work, we run everything on an HP Proliant x86 running Debian Sarge.
It's really fast even if it serves all the desktop to some XTerminals.
Yes, x86 performance these days is really tempting.
As for the cheap hardware and replacement parts.
At work, I could not do my job on Alpha. Nor our customers can.
Simply, Alpha has never been targeted to SMB, which still are most of the
business running in the world.
But when I come to myself, when I come back home and to IT as my hobby, I
know which platform is the best!
Of course, in the medium/long time, Alpha arch will be a target like
vax and 68k and we have to face it, willing or not...
Anyway, I could bet that Alpha workstations and servers will be more
interesting (and better engeneered) than all the x86/x64 machines coming
out in the next 10 years!
Bye!

That's wild, I know a guy thats doing that sort of thing with SOHO x86
servers... When is company let him go and folded, they literally gave
him a boat load of servers and equipment... it was pretty wild!
One of these days I'm going to have to get me another domain name,
something like Alphas.com or some such and put up an software repository
of all the software I compiled for the Alpha [RH7.2+ to AlphaCore] along
with all the software patches available so that others can build their
own software on their own personal boxes.
Oh and one other thing, I'll keep you in mind next time I file a
bugreport... When ever I do bug searches, it seems my box is the only
one that comes up But since the AMD64 has rolled out, the number of
issues have dropped considerably. The first thing that comes to mind is
the 'reallocation' errors that I got with Xfree86-4.6 at Xfree.org...
Some issues with their code and later releases of Bintils/GCC-4.x...
Well I'll talk to you in a bit, Will L G [wlgivensREMOVETHIS@southkc.net]

RH 7.2 seems really outdated, there should be GBs of software to download.
Or are you just making security patches?

I think that there were problems which showed up only on Alpha because of
64bit architecture.
It sounds strange that the bugs didn't show up on Sparc and Power and only
got fixed on AMD64... maybe... larger user base?

Ehm...
I still consider that dropping XFree after 4.3.0 is a good idea!

Well it may be Redhat 7.2 but its pretty up to date... At the time that
I went with RH7.2 it was the only real game around not to mention it was
actually created by Compaq on behalf of Redhat. My current install is
several years old and runs almost all the latest software:
Kernel-2.6.16.1
GLIBC-2.3.2
KDE-3.5.3
Gnome-2.10.x [last version not requiring Xorg]
Xfce-4.2.3.x
Xfree86-4.5
GCC-4.1.1/4.1.0/3.4.3/3.2.3/3.0.4/2.96
Binutils-2.17.0
QuakeI/II/III
Battlefield 1942 [still working some kinks out of that one]
LinCity
etc.
It's Redhat 7.2 in name and in a couple of configure scripts Granted
I compile a lot of software on this box but I also roll everything in to
RPM's so reinstalling/updating is a breeze... Not to mention I don't
have a lot of 'dead' files laying around. If I did do a complete
reinstall, I could get everything back up to snuff in a matter of a few
'rpm -Uvh <files>' ... Will L G |
