I'm using Puppy Linux 2.12. I have installed Flash 9 and it works
flawlessly in SeaMonkey but not in Opera 9.10. For instance if I go to
http://www.cnettv.com/ the complete browserwindow goes grey. Can someone
confirm this and give me a hint on what to do with plug-ins and stuff to
make it work? Thanks!

Hello,
yes, it a known issue, flash 9 plugin doesn't support Opera, so that's why
it doesn't work too well. Usually reloading the page helps.

Thanks but I've tried everything and can't make it work. If someday it
works I'll post the solution here though...

So, I have installed the ASPLinux-11.2 which is based on Fedora 4. By
other words, I have Fedora Core 4
Opera-9.20 build 557, opera-9.20-20070202.6 RPM-package dynamically linked
with Qt libraries
flash-plugin-9.0.31.0-release RPM-package from Adobe
When I had installation of flash-plugin, it replaced all old files from
old flash-plugin. And now I watch the YouTube movies without problems.

I'll jump in here. I'm running Opera 9.02 on Slackware 10.0 (on one
machine) and 10.2 (on the other machines).
On both machines, I ran into Adobe's obnoxious "opera is not supported"
message. I completed the install for Firefox and Mozilla, then copied the
libflashplayer.so file into /usr/lib/opera/plugins directory.
Everything works fine.

I just tried this on Gentoo. Using the appropriate ebuilds and a
custom install of build 577. Youtube movies continue to stall at
"Loading" (while Internet Exploder starts the movie nearly
immediately).
Checking the plugins, I see flash 9.0.31, but I see it listed twice.
There are lots of complaints in the invoking xterm.

I have Ubuntu 5.10, Opera 9.10 build 521, and
install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz from Adobe. Flash wasn't
working at all for my Opera, but is now. Here is what I did,
don't ask me to explain why it worked, maybe the default
libflash-mozplugin.so that my Ubuntu has was interfering with
the new libflashplayer.so .
First download Adobe's tarball, and unpack it. The script
(flashplayer-installer) in the tarball only tells you that
opera is unsupported when you give it the path to opera, so
just skip the script. The following commands beginning with #
must be executed as root. Exit opera.
cd install_flash_player_9_linux
# install -pm 644 libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/opera/plugins/
mv ~steve/.opera/opera6.ini ~steve/.opera/opera6.ini.orig
sed -e "s%Open Dir=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/%Open
Dir=/usr/lib/opera/plugins%" ~/.opera/opera6.ini.orig > ~/.opera/opera6.ini
opera &
Adobe's test page should show a interactive flash (click it):
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
In the end Tools->Advanced->Plug-ins in Opera should say,
at least:
Shockwave Flash
application/futuresplash spl
application/x-shockwave-flash swf
/usr/lib/opera/plugins/libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash
application/x-shockwave-flash swf
application/x-futuresplash spl
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflash-mozplugin.so
Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Downloads should say, at least:
applications/x-futuresplash spl
application/xshockwave-flash swf
The plugin directory that Opera was looking had nothing useful
to me.
Here are Opera's instructions, but they don't say what I've
just said:

Hello all,
Found a solution to the stalled loading of youtube
movies!!!!
Its seems that for Gentoo installs, Opera
9.20 started up with a plugin search path that
included /opt/netscape/plugins. Until I found
this post:

Just reading the release notes, says it doesn't work in Opera ("The plugin does not currently work in Opera browsers. We are working with Opera on this issue.")? I'm a little confused since I'm running it fine in Opera at the moment.
There's a trick to get it to work though, you need to put the libflashplayer.so file into /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins/ (I think it just has to be anywhere that has 'opera' in the directory path). By default Gentoo installs the file into /opt/netscape/plugins/ which doesn't let things like YouTube or Google Video work. Just my 2c |
So I went into opera prefs Advanced tab:Content:
Plug-In Options button and changed the plugin
search path to disable loading from /opt/netscape..
Then I copied the flash and libflash files in the
/opt/opera... path:
| Code: |
cp /opt/netscape/plugins/flashplayer.xpt /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins
cp /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so /opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins |
Then I quit opera and restarted and suddenly
I get flash movies. And I haven't compared, but
it seems like they loaded faster than in firefox!
Hope this helps everyone else with stalled youtube
movies in Opera 9.20 |

Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply. I will try this out when
I play with Puppy again. At the moment I'm in PCLinuxOS and here Flash9
worked fine in Opera instantly.
