I can't find where Firefox keeps its list of passwords for websites.
Presumably it's a dot file somewhere. But where, please?
TIA

~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>
I forget the exact file, signons.<something> I think.
The key3.db file is also required if copying to another profile.

cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default
Then for FF3, it's files: signons3.txt and key3.db

Dave, thanks for this. But the trouble is they are both either binary or
garbled. I could of course simply copy out the details from the prefs
window, but I was hoping there was an easier way. Maybe not?

what you want is the KeycAES3 firefox extension
get from here under downloads
http://earl-roosa.com/
install, restart, look under tools, fire-it-up and read the help.
the pertinent bit is
<q>
Install KeycAES on your primary profile and export your passwords in .xml
format, in CLEAR TEXT:
1- Export
2- Out (ClearText)
3- Write
You don't need to put in a passkey or change any settings; your text will
be written to your Desktop, in keycaes3.xml.
<un-q>
Best to select csv format

GIYF.
The Firefox Password Exporter addon lives at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2848
"This extension allows you to export your saved passwords and disabled
login hosts using XML or CSV files that can be imported in another
browser or computer."
