How do I manage to get a successful emerge?
It bombs because of a missing XML::Parser, which seems to be a known
problem - when I created a bug-report it was closed within minutes as
a duplicate of a much earlier bug. That's all very well, but not much
help to me when the problem has clearly been there for weeks - I did
a
emerge --sync
emerge mozilla-firefox
twice about a week apart and both failed ...
btw, I use KDE, and have -gnome (or whatever it is) in my use flags -
the earlier bug was something to do with gnome.
Cheers,
Wol |

I can't re-emerge something I hadn't emerged Seriously, why should
I need to emerge something that ought to be a dependency?
Anyways, done that, and it now fails with "no error message" !!!
Can anyone recommend a decent browser other than firefox or konq?

I'll have to try it - my brother likes it. Actually, I'm after a
browser so's I can test Apache, and I'm having a little fun there too
- loads of information on "how to upgrade apache", but nothing on how
to install it. Is it Apache2 by default now? I emerge Apache and get
the test page, but don't know how to check which version it is. I want
to install a wiki, so I need to enable php, and I'm getting
conflicting messages from the documentation ...

Bug is http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182384
Did you bother to read the bug yours was a dupe of?

Indeed, you need to fix your perl installation. When Portage told you to
run perl-cleaner, it meant it, you ignored it.
Emerging dev-perl/XML-Parser might not be enough.

Known issue, ignoring messages from Portage does you no good.

That's not very informative, but neither was your bug...

Basic istallation is not that hard
(http://gentoo-wiki.com/Apache2_Install). And it's indeed Apache2, the
1.x seems to have been kicked out of portage...
How about running 'emerge -s apache' or 'eix -S apache'?
And you should use webapp-config to install and configure web applications.

From time to time you have to act crazy in order not to become it... |

I'm a gentoo newbie - I don't think I knew how too.

Where did it tell me to run perl-cleaner? Are you telling me that the
perl installation is broken as it comes from portage?

Agreed. But iirc, it was the "emerge firefox" command that pulled perl
in as a dependency - from my point of view it's still a firefox bug if
it depends on a broken perl install ...

"no error message" is not what I said, it's what emerge says
Oh well, bugzilla seems to be taking that bug seriously now.

On Windows, yes. On SuSE yes. On my gentoo, no
