Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>suse (more info?)

Hi folks,
I am a relatively new user of Linux and have used openSuSe 10.2 since
December last year, mainly for learning and getting the feel for the OS.

I am now trying to slowly switch over to using Suse 10.2 for Web
browsing and thus have come across this following, IMHO, bug:

I make Firefox 2 my default browser and when I click on a downloaded
or saved file on my desktop or in a documents folder, it will not open
it if it has a space in the name (eg my links.html). If Firefox is
already running and I go through the ff file menu to open it, no problem
- it opens it.

NB: This is the message from Firefox:
"File not found
Firefox can't find the file at /home/peter1/Desktop/My."

Just to prove that it is not anything to do with me mucking up
the system, I just re-installed a fresh suse 10.2 KDE base install on a
spare partition and the same problem exists there too.

Conclusion: I am pretty sure its a bug but since I am no expert, I seek
the opinion and advice from others who are expert and/or more experienced.

I am using KDE desktop and have the latest Firefox version on my first
installation. The test install Firefox is the version that came on the
DVD iso.

Thanks in advance for any help in rectifying this problem.

Regards,
Peter

PS: I have tried searching for a solution to this via google but no luck
so far.

Not sure if I'm clear on what your saying but I created a file called
"My Test.html" (with a space though this is bad windows behavior) right
clicked on it and chose "Open With Firefox". That opens the file and I
click on the content of that page, which is a link to ibm.com and that
opens the web site... So no problem here. Firefox version is:
MozillaFirefox-2.0.0.2-8.2

Perhaps you need to update your Firefox...

Or else, since you're using KDE you should open up konqueror and go
to ->Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> File Associations. In the 'Find
filename pattern box type .html .Click on the + next to the word text.
Click on the html icon. Select Firefox from the list. Click Edit. On
the 'Application' tab make sure the 'Command' box has firefox%u .

Also, I suspect what you are seeing 'may' be a default when telling Firefox
to be the default browser. Instead of clicking on an html file try right
clicking on it and choose 'open with' and select Firefox. I don't think
that will make any difference but give it a try.

I may be dreaming, but I think a bug was found that caused that very
behavior. You might try downloading the latest version. There is a check
for updates link in the help menu I think.

The following is the version I have (it is the latest, as far as I can
work out, reported by the "Smart Package Manager":

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2)
Gecko/20061023 SUSE/2.0.0.2-1.1 Firefox/2.0.0.2

I do not have the full Gnome Desktop packages installed but I have the
Nautilus file browser and I just found out that Firefox does fine
working through it! Smile

It seems like an KDE/Konqueror (same in "Dolphin") issue to me. Also,
when I am browsing a folder with Konqueror and there are html files
inside it, clicking on them will still open only in Konqueror
regardless of what browser is set as the default (via file association)

Same thing happens whether I right click and "open with Firefox", or
directly click on, a html file (only on the desktop though because
anywhere else a direct click will open in Konqueror - no problem with
spaces either!).

I will give "firefox%u" setting a try but I don't think it is the solution.

Thanks for your help,

There is "firefox %u" setting already, I checked (it does not seem to be
the issue).

Change that to
firefox "%u"
and all should be well
(Note the doublequotes around the %u are necessary)

Because if you click on the file (left-click) it is not opened but viewed.
You can disable that konqueror shows html-files embedded in the
file-associations.

Hi Lew,
Thanks for trying to help me but your suggestion didn't work for me.

Hi Sven,
Thanks for your tip! I did learn something very useful to me from this. Smile

But I still have the problem of Firefox being unable to open html files
with spaces in the name when file browsing in Konqueror/Dolphin and on
the KDE Desktop. Firefox has no problem when I am browsing the same
files with Nautilus.

Any tips or suggestions on solving this problem?

Cheers,
Peter
