Using Ubuntu 9.04. I have a networked printer on the network. is there a
tool that will show me the IP address of the printer? (I actually know
it, but it would be handy if I needed to add a networked printer when
joined to another network...)
Thanks!

Make it print out a test sheet - usually by holding down combinations
of buttons when it powers up...
Or check the DHCP server logs, or run a ping/probe over all hosts (nmap),
or connect up a windows PC and ask it to search for a printer (I'm sure
ther are linux tools for this too) but making it print a test page is
the easiest way I've found in the past (akin to giving a fine barometer
to a building caretaker and asking him how high it is)
(Well, with HP printers - not sure about others)

The HPLIP print tool for HP printers will find IP printers
automatically. Give it the subnet for your network and it'll do the
rest. Once it's found you can find it's IP. No idea about other types,
sorry. |

.... if you have a HP JetDirect network server installed. These listen on
port 9100.
OTOH, if you have a Laserjet 5 with an Emulex NetJet printer server
installed, these listen on port 2501. Use the setup menu to set the
printer's IP.
Fedora's Printer configuration applet can find both these print servers.

Just added a network printer here, I used arp and cross referenced
from the MAC address...
As others have said you can normally get this info displayed or
printed by the printer itself with a magic combination of button
pushes or menu navigation.
