..----
| The release of Fedora™ Core 6 will see several improvements in the
| way printing is configured and used. The print spooler itself has had
| a major upgrade; the printing administration tool has been
| re-written; and the dialog you see when printing a document has been
| dramatically improved.
|
| ...
|
| The first thing you will notice is that the CUPS service starts much
| more quickly. This is due in part to the fact that devices are now
| detected on-demand rather than at start-up. Rather than probing
| serial ports and examining USB devices when the service starts, this
| is now only done when configuring a printer.
|
| ...
|
| There is a lot to look forward to in Fedora Core 6 associated with
| printing support, and more to come after that. The printing
| configuration tool has been re-designed and re-written, a task long
| overdue. This, together with the much improved printing dialog in
| Gtk+, hopefully brings the printing experience on Fedora a step
| closer to the goal of being truly easy to use.

Personally, I've never had a problem with printing under Linux, but
for the few who seem to (for some reason) things are about to get
even better.

It all seems to be based on which printer you have. I know that my
current printer would work perfectly on Linux if I changed the last two
numbers, this is the way it has always been for me, and if FC6 is going
to rectify this somehow, it's a welcome addition.

As I see it, one of the most frustrating things that happens when
someone starts on Linux is that some things (wi-fi, printers,
usb-modems to name a few likely culprits) don't "just work". This has a
heck-load to do with the way that the companies that build the hardware
see the market as predominantly MAC/Windows based, they can either make
something for the MAC, or something for Windows, they currently only
see Linux as 'niche' market, good for the server but not widely adopted
on the desktop.

In some ways this is perfectly true. However, it is this attitude we
should be changing, not the support packages for printers... still if
it gets my printer working.

It'll get better in general.

The Free Standards Group Unites Linux Printing Initiatives

,----[ Quote ]
| The Free Standards Group (FSG), a nonprofit organization dedicated
| to developing and promoting open source software standards, today
| nnounced Linuxprinting.org, the de facto standard repository for
| printer drivers on Linux, is merging with the FSG's OpenPrinting
| workgroup and will be integrated and supported in the Linux

Ubuntu makes this extremely easy. Even easier than in Windows, which will
most likely not have the drivers and require that users install some
bloatware (buh-bye Registry) along with the drivers.

I have to agree with Sasquatch. One of Linux biggest obstacles to
overcome is the end-user's ability to easily discover and configure
wi-fi adapters. Until Linux becomes "wi-fi friendly" to the un-educated
masses it will remain a "Geeks Only" playground.

....and THAT, dear fellow geeks, would be a shame.

After takin' a swig o' grog, Trainfriend belched out this bit o' wisdom:

It would be, except that Windows XP is not a lot better at it.

What bugs me most about wpa_supplicant on Debian is that I can't seem to
keep it from connecting to routers that I don't want to connect to,
I have to keep it from roaming.
