Archived from groups: linux>redhat>install (more info?)

Warning! Newbie here. I've posted a few questions on dual booting FC6/XP on
another newsgroup and have been able to get a good idea of how/what to do.
However, as I further investigate, it appears that a dual boot configuration
isn't what I really want. My goal is to have a Liunx test server for web
pages to use with Dreamweaver.

I was under the impression that with a dual boot you had both systems
running, but you chose one to be the primary one you are working in. Then I
noted in some online tutorials/lessons that in fact both systems won't be
running - only one at a time - therefore negating the usefulness of the
server. Can anyone fill in the gaps/details about how to use a dual boot
system for a test server?

My other options are either:
1. An old laptop (would need to upgrade the memory otherwise FC6 hangs on
install - tried this already) and attach it to my local network via a PC
NIC.

2. The old desktop (also would need a memory upgrade) and a KVM switch so I
can access FC to adjust parameters while testing if needed. I'm hesitant to
use this -it would take up more space and I had already removed the hard
drive to put in my new desktop for the dual boot - so I'd have to do another
uninstall/reinstall -argghhh.

Any recommendataions/suggestions?

Thanks,
Christina

Christian,

Other alternative: run vmware server on FC6 or WinXP and put the other
OS in a Virtual Machine.

My question is then how would I be able to tell Dreamweaver where to find
the server for testing? I've done a Win2003 server b4 but it was running on
a separate machine and was set up by someone else. I could access it with a
vm interface from my desktop for managing it (editing php.ini, etc.), but it
did have it's own ip/url, which is how I designated it to DW, as well as
being mapped to my machine for large amounts of document transfers.

Also, is VM server actually free? Or is it a free for only a trial?

Christina,

A VM is to the network a normal machine, with itīs own ip/url.

VM server is free.

When doing a VM install - should I use DHCP or static IP with the FC6
iinstall ( I already have Virtual PC, so will install it with that)? I have
a wireless network at my house - usually about 4 machines using it
(everybody has their own laptop - I normally use the destop). If testing
through DW would it be an problem with DHCP if the IP isn't the same?

My router's IP configuration is the standard - 198.162.1.1, subnet mask
255.255.255.0. Current IP range assigned to the computers via DHCP are
198.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.149. If I assign a static IP within this range,
it should be fine, right? What about gateway and DNS servers?

Also considering install Win Server 2003 for another test server so
Hmm....so many things to consider...

Thanks again,
Christina

You can use whichever fits better in your network setup.

No, static IPs must be allocated outside of the DHCP address range.
