Hi all,

Can someone please help me... I'm a total newbie to Linux and simply
want to erase some cd-rw discs. I seem to be able to burn blank discs
via the file browser in Gnome but I cant work out how to simply erase
a disc. In KDE, I believe you can use a program called K3b and I was
wondering if such a program came as 'standard' with Gnome? I tried
searching on Google and found an article on using the terminal with
cdrecord. I tried this but I get a message saying this is Wodim, not
cdrecord. Any advice would be much appreciated. Please keep it simple
though as I'm still learning!

You can also use K3b under xfce.

When you have K3b running click on further actions and you will find
'erase - CD-RW'

My preference is for a program called "brasero" ('Erase' is in the
'Disc' menu). It is the same kind of front-end to the usual tools as
K3b, but has a Gnome interface and this avoids pulling in KDE stuff
into your distribution. (Not that that is a problem, just something
some people prefer to avoid.)

K3B as the name implies is KDE, not gnome, although it should be available
easily enough (or even installed right now) on whatever distro you're using.

Try it.
open a console, type k3b at the prompt
see if it starts.

If not, then you'll need to tell us what distribution you're using before we
can tell you how to install it.

You can use k3b (and indeed any kde or gnome application) under any window
manager as long as the support libraries are installed.
