Archived from groups: linux>debian>isp (more info?)

Any one else seeing an (as of now) unannounced Debian Sarge kernel
update? I haven't seen anything mentioned publicly yet, but I have a
system saying it came out (on a mirror) about an hour ago.

Package: kernel-image-2.6-686-smp
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: base
Installed-Size: 32
Maintainer: Debian kernel team
Architecture: i386
Source: kernel-latest-2.6-i386
Version: 101sarge1
Depends: kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp
Description: Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on
PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 SMP.
This package will always depend on the latest 2.6 kernel image
available
for Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium 4 with SMP
support.
SMP (symmetric multi-processing) is needed if you have multiple
processors.

Any ideas on what this if for?

I see some possible things over on security focus. entropy weakness,
local DoS, etc.

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Hi all,

My Raid 5 fell over. Sad Have been trying to recover it with no luck.
Here is my setup and what i have done.

Linux, software raid5. Seven SATA drives in the array (the 8th drive
was supposed to be a hot-spare, but it didn't get properly initialized
into the array). Had one drive fail, and was rebuilding after a power
reset. Had a second drive dump while the first was still rebuilding.
After another reboot, mdadm tells me that the two 'failed' drives are
now spares, and it can't start the array with only 5 drives.

Best info I could find to begin recovery at this point is to use 'mdadm
--create --assume-clean' to rebuild the array and recreate the
superblocks. I've tried this on all 7 drives, plus I tried in degraded
mode cutting out one, then the other of the two bad drives. In every
case, /proc/mdstat claims the array is back online, but attempts to
mount the array give me a "group descriptors corrupted" error.

I'm not sure what else I can try without fear of completely mucking up
my chances of a data recovery. I've got about 900GB of data on the
array (most of which is just downloads though), and it would certainly
be nice to get it back up again.

Many thanks in advance,

Julian

Hi Julian

Build from scratch, restore from backup.

Also: start a new thread for a new question, and you may want to try a
more appropriate list - this one is 'debian-isp'; maybe 'debian-users'
would be better.

Thanks for your advice, thats the way I have gone.

I thought this list was appropriate as raids concerns the people that
monitor this list, more so then debian-users. But never the less, i
already have asked on that list as well. Smile

I hope you didnt miss the "start a new thread for a new question" which
means you shouldn't reply onto existing post if you aren't really going to
reply to it. If you are posting new question, send new mail, not a reply to
other mail.
