Archived from groups: linux>debian>doc (more info?)

Hi there!

I've been using Debian for a while now and recently came across this
page:

https://penta.debconf.org/~joerg/events/82.en.html

A few years ago I was a member of the GNOME Documentation Project so I
have experience using doc-book (SGML and XML) and of course actually
writing documentation. I'd like to help out if help is still needed.

I should point out that I have no formal training writing manuals.

How does one typically get started? Do I have to run Unstable? Is there
a document that would help me get started? What sorts of technologies do
people use?

Cheers,

Yes, that is by javi. We are lacking people.

Good.

Since we need to describe for next release, having acess to
testing/unstable environment is required. It is possible to run stable
if you set up chroot for testing/unstable to check latest behavior if
you are considering new content writing.

For translation, stable may be good enough but testing/unstable may be
better.

I personally run unstable.

We used to use
* CVS
* debiandoc-sgml

But people (e.g. d-i folks for installation manual) are moving to
* svn and other VCS
* DocBook XML

What kind of work are you in mind?
* creating whole new document focused on particular subject.
* translation
* updating existing one?

http://www.debian.org/doc/ has list of existing ones.

For my Debian Reference, I am trying to make total reorganization.
* tentatively draft content in Wiki
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianReference
* thinking to convert it to DocBook XML with po4a
