This may be either caused by hald (which is a non-cooperative
application), so kill it or a bug in growisofs.

Why not use cdrecord (the original
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/)
instead of the bastardized imitation "dvdrecord"?
Cdrecord also gives better error reports than growisofs.
