I have been trying for weeks now to coerce my system into burning some
video-dvds.

The problem I keep running into using growisofs:

growisofs -Z /dev/hdd --dvd-video dvd.iso
Executing 'mkisofs --dvd-video . | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdd obs=32k seek=0'
INFO: UTF-8 character encoding detected by locale settings.
Assuming UTF-8 encoded filenames on source filesystem,
use -input-charset to override.
/dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 2.0x1385KBps.
:-! "COMMAND SEQUENCE ERROR"@LBA=0h. Is media being read?
:-! the LUN appears to be stuck at 0h, retrying in 5 secs...
:-! "COMMAND SEQUENCE ERROR"@LBA=0h. Is media being read?

I read umpteen postings on the matter, how-to's, tried many many
different approaches (tried cdrecord, dvdrecord (deprecated) with all
feasible options), graphical tools, removing the /dev/hdd line
altogether from fstab to be sure nothing is hogging it, checked
auto.master etc, switched to runlevel 1, but everytime the very same error.

cdrecord --scanbus:
csibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'PLEXTOR ' 'DVD-ROM PX-116A2' '1.00' Removable CD-ROM
1,1,0 101) '_NEC ' 'DVD_RW ND-2500A ' '1.06' Removable CD-ROM

I have burnt cd-r's with the same burner effortlessly. I tried DVD-R+,
DVD-R-, and DVD-RW, all with similar results. (I did also try the 'scsi'
notation as well...)

Under my former OS windoze it worked without a hassle.

Any ideas on where to look next ?
TIA

Sh.

This may be either caused by hald (which is a non-cooperative
application), so kill it or a bug in growisofs.

Why not use cdrecord (the original ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/)
instead of the bastardized imitation "dvdrecord"?

Cdrecord also gives better error reports than growisofs.
