Right; I got the X-display working today. Two problems: there
wasn't a symlink at /usr/bin/X11 pointing to /usr/X11R6/bin; and the
BusID for the display adapter wasn't set in the Device section...
Now, to return to the tape:
a) What do I have to do to give dumb users access to the tape? At the moment
I get:
ivan@SuperPC:~$ mt -f /dev/st0 status
mt: /dev/st0: Permission denied
ivan@SuperPC:~$ ls -l /dev/st0
crw-rw---- 1 root tape 9, 0 2005-02-27 23:33 /dev/st0
but as root:
SuperPC:/home/ivan# ls -l /dev/st0
crw-rw---- 1 root tape 9, 0 2005-02-27 23:33 /dev/st0
SuperPC:/home/ivan# mt -f /dev/st0 status
drive type = Generic SCSI-2 tape
drive status = 603979776
sense key error = 0
residue count = 0
file number = -1
block number = -1
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x24 (DDS-2).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (5010000):
WR_PROT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
Is this simply a matter of using chmod to change the permissions?
b) At the moment I want to copy windows backup-sets off the tapes I have.
These were created with NTBackup and as far as I know are just files on the
tape. What utilities might be able to copy these backups to disk, so that
I can then extract files from them using NTBackup on a Windows machine?
When I tried, e.g. tar or file the process hung and would not be killed.
I've seen one suggestion to use dd to get VMS backup files off a SCSI
tape, is that the way to go?
