I purchased a XP1000 from ebay about 3 weeks ago and for the first
2 weeks the system worked great. However, I am running into
a problem where the system will power on and run any where from
a few seconds to few hours and then just power off. I reseated
the daughter card, video card, memory and power supply
connections and so far the issue remains. I connected a serial
console and set the output to that and when the system powers
off no error message is seen. When the system remains powered
on it works great. For the past 2 days I have only been booting
to the SRM, booting into Linux and the issue is present. All the
skins are on and the fans appears to be working fine.
For the first two weeks I would power the system on, use it and then
power it off to save electricity so I am not sure if I had left it
running I would have run into this earlier. Furthermore I have a switched
power strip that I turn off when none of my systems are running
to reduce power consumption when the systems are off
(Saves about 42 watts).
Any one have any ideas? The only thing I can think of is the
power supply is marginal and most likely needs to be replaced,
but I am not sure and even if that is the issue it won't be
cost effective more me to replace the power supply.
I may be selling this system on Ebay for parts/repair
and taking a significant loss, but a system that powers
off at random isn't very useful.
Thanks,
Tony |

Sounds like a bad power supply.

Dear Tony,
I'll second that about the power supply. You can check it easily. The
PWS and XP machines both use a standard ATX power supply, 350W for the
XP and 300 for the PWS. Some of the PWS machines had Sparkle power
supplies.
You can take a PSU off anuy decent ATX PC, or else spring for some
thing nice, like a 350W Enermax - they're about $45 on the internet
last time I looked.
good luck
