package: gdm3
version: 3.4.1-1
severity: normal

Hi,

The latest gdm3 uploads promoted metacity from a suggests to a
depends. This pulls in many additional libraries (such as webkit),
which aren't really useful when gdm3 is only used as a simple login
manager. By default recommends are installed, so I think that would
be a better place for this; since it makes it possible for users to be
selective.

Thanks,
Mike

I’m afraid this is not going to happen, since metacity is now completely
required by the fallback session (which is the default).

Cheers,

I see. What about demoting metacity's zenity depends to a recommends?
That would have a similar effect; reducing a lot of the bigger
dependencies like webkit being pulled in.

If that seems reasonable, I'll reassign to metacity.

Best wishes,
Mike

Currently metacity really needs zenity to show error messages.
However it looks like this code (in src/core/util.c) could be easily
replaced by C code doing the same thing.

If you can patch it out, we’ll happily remove the dependency.
