I'm just confirming that the whirlpool hash is definitely the culprit.
Disabling the whirlpool hash in my aide.conf allows AIDE to proceed without
crashing.

Does whirlpool still crash your aide on sparc64?

I haven't tried it in quite some time. I disabled it when I found it was the
source of the problem and haven't really looked back.

I'm still using Debian Etch/Sparc64 on that machine, with libmhash2=0.9.7-1
and aide=0.13.1-2. Since the versions haven't changed, I'm assuming the
problem hasn't gone away. Are you trying to identify if just re-enabling it
will work now for some other reason? Or are you trying to see if it works in
Lenny?

Most probably.

I would like to see whether mhash 0.9.9 in lenny might have fixed the
issue.

Greetings

I wasn't going to be upgrading this machine to Lenny since it's being replaced
instead soon. When I take it offline, I'll upgrade it and test. It should
only be another week or so I expect.

That would be really great, I appreciate that.

For what it's worth, I haven't forgotten, but I haven't made the same progress
as I expected either. I promise when I do finally decomission that server, I
will get back to you. Hopefully, it won't be more than another week or two
now, but some setbacks have unfortunately delayed my response.

Oh, well, then the bug is actually still unfixed. I apologize for the
extra work.

There is a possible patch in the sourceforge tracker
(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1721000&group_id=4286&atid=104286),
but given that this was filed in 2007 and has not been commented on by
the maintainers, I don't think that it makes much sense in patching
and compiling the "current" mhash upstream version (which is one year
old and has not yet found its way into Debian) on Debian lenny and
trying out whether the issue is still there. There seems nobody left
caring about mhash anyway Sad

I'm going to let this bug rot away in the BTS until somebody wakes up,
and I would suggest that you retire the box.

Greetings
Marc
