Archived from groups: linux>debian>bugs>dist (more info?)

Package: nfs-common
Version: 1:1.0.10-6
Severity: important

I have two network interfaces on "worktoo". One comes up as eth0 during boot. This is a 10/100 interface.
The second is eth2 which is a 1000 Mb/s connected to a NAS.

In fstab I have entries to mount a few nfs exports from the NAS. If the NAS is mounted using the 10/100 eth0
they will be mounted during boot. The prefered solution is to mount it using the 1000 Mb/s subnet on eth2.
This worked before upgrading to etch. Since etch it is not possible to use the eth2 interface. During boot the
system freezes when portmap is tried to be started. If portmap is killed I get the message that the mount is
locked and already mounted. This is however not the case. The interface eth2 is not started (not seen by ifconfig)
and a "mount -a" will hang the system. If however the NAS is mounted using eth0 (slow subnet) it comes up, at a
lower speed. In this case even eth2 comes up (is seen by ifconfig).

In the case when the nfs-mount is done unsuccessfylly using the eth2 card it is still possible to get
everything up with a little tweeking (ifup -a; mount -a) etc.

I thought I had already reassigned this, but obviously not; this does not
sound like a bug in nfs-utils, as client-side mounting is handled mostly by
mount.

Hi,

It seems like I've gotten this bug back into my lap due to mounting being
taken over by nfs-common. Could you please see if this still breaks with
nfs-common 1:1.1.0-12 and initscripts 2.86.ds1-38.1? Both should be in
incoming right now, and hit unstable shortly after that.

I can't guarantee that, sorry. There have been quite a lot of changes; I'd
try to reproduce it on an unstable machine if I were you.

Any progress on this? I'm starting to wonder if the best thing is just to
close it; there is no value in keeping a bug open if we do not really know if
it's fixed or not.

Hi Steinar,

I wouldn't like to see this bug dropped as we still have issues with it.
My understanding is that mountnfs tries to mount the NFS shares as soon
as the first interface is available. We worked round this by changing
the order that the interfaces are brought up. from 'auto eth0 eth1' to
'auto eth1 eth0'. However this has the side effect that the mount still
failed as the DNS server was off eth0. Final workround was to have a
seconday DNS server available off eth1.

But it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Mountnfs should wait
till all interfaces that are configured to start automatically are up,
or fstab needs options to specify the interface that the nfs shares will
use (but that i feel is 'non standard').

If you need me to do some testing with an 'unstable' system then I will.
But I don't want to repeat work that someone else is already doing.

Cheers
