I use Ubuntu on my Netbook, I pulled Karmic down to see what stuff has
changed, Gnome would not be my first choice of Desktop but its easy
enough to configure to how I like to work, as this was a update I have
not needed to add any stuff to configure it for my use, and nothing was
taken out or broken unusual for a upgrade this size. First thing of note
is it looks cleaner, and adding software is made a lot simpler with the
new interface, I had some mpeg tracks I had bought that I wanted to put
to CD for the car, found I had no conversion software on my main box so
dumped it on to a stick and as a test, used the new interface to install
Audacity, 3 mins I am loading and converting to wave files, dump the
completed files across home network, job done. I like software and
systems that work, allow you to get the job done no fuss or bother,
Karmic is a winner.
As a long term user of SuSe, I am almost tempted to change, but it
doesn't yet come up to the same level, and are very much looking to see
what OpenSuse 11.2 is like, with the slightly longer development time,
and the addition of KDE4.3, it should be interesting to see how it has
developed.
Interestingly I had a look a Windows 7, admittedly in PC World, its nice
to see that they are taking ideas from both Gnome and KDE, but its a
shame they still don't see the value of multiply desktops or allow
multiple users.
