I see HTC are advertising on TV, with the "Hero" centre stage, what I
find interesting is that it uses Android a Linux based OS, HTC also sell
Microsoft based mobiles, but they decided to focus on a Linux based
phone, this I think is a shift away from Microsoft on mobile devices, in
the news today Sony announced they will also be adopting Android for
their newest phone.
Digging a little deeper it looks like we could see Android on the
desktop. So you have a mobile device that runs on Linux, has thousands of
applications, then you find it also runs on your desktop, it would seem
that Linux on the desktop may just come from a different direction.
I find it interesting 5 years ago it was difficult to see mention in the
mainstream anything about Linux, today you see mention of Linux all over,
and with heavy weight companies such as HTC and Sony pushing a Linux
system I think we have just moved up yet another level.

Yes indeed. - and as our good friend Raylupez99 reminds us in another
thread that he has started, there is also the possibility that the GCOS
(Google Chrome OS) will be making an appearance (alpha, of course) soon.
One slightly off-topic comment - I have been pleasantly surprised lately by
a number of people whom I would call "technophobes" who have found,
installed, are using, and *like* the Google Chrome Browser. |

I have suggested it for a number of people. Most who have used it have
stayed with it. Good for systems where, for whatever reason, Apple's Safari
is not a good fit but users still benefit from WebKit.

Well, Jem Jem, with Linux running on them there should be NO excuses for
not having desktop SW for Linux to synchronise them. Or?
Perhaps you can some others can contact them now and ask for the specs
and code up something? |

Not really clear on what you are saying, but will hazard a guess, can I
plug my HTC Hero into my SuSe box and sync with it, No I can't, yes I can
interact with it add music, copy images to the desktop, add programs to
it or write programs for it, do I need to sync? No I do my calender by
syncing it to the web, I do the same with e-mail and contacts, I use my
desktop to do the same, so I don't actually have a use to sync it to my
desktop. I have not looked but am sure there is a application for it, or
I could use Wine to run HTC software, but that only sync,s to Outlook, a
program I don't use or have a need for. A web approach is much simpler I
don't need to carry a cable, I don't need to have both devices in the
same place, and I don't need to have licences for several copies of the
software I might need to sync to.
I am guessing your second comment references how Google has created
Android, given people the tools to create and write what apps they like
for it, including allowing both free and payed for apps, whilst retaining
control over the Android OS, I can't see why a closed source advocate
would have an issue with that, I can see why an Open Source purists might
reject Google's approach, but don't follow your argument.
