|

I am using WinXP SP2. I have the following problem writing data to a CD-R:
I send the files I want to write, usually a folder, to the CD drive and get the balloon saying I have files ready to be written, but when I try to write the files, the wizard gives me an error message saying that there is no writable CD in the drive, or it is full. If I reboot and try again, it will work the second time. By the way, the first time, the default title shown for the disk is Disk 1, the second successful time it is the current date.
TIA for any solution. |

What program are you using to write with? First thing I'd try is to go to "System Properties > Hardware" and remove the CD unit. Reboot and let the computer "find" it again. |

| What brand of CD's are you using? - All of the EL CHEAPO's aren't worth the bother! I have ran into problems myself with bad (cheap) CD's - they will do all kinds of weird stuff. |

I'm not on a retainer with "Ahead Software" but probably should be.
I've sold hundreds of copied of "Nero Burning Rom" software over the years. Usually, to people who were having CD burning problems.
Some of that built in CD burning software isn't worth the disk space it takes up.
Then as Baby_Tux just said, using el'cheapo CD's is a definite NO! NO!
ALSO: Make sure that your CD drive will take the type (plus R, or minus R) that you're trying to use. Only the latest drives will take both, but most still prefer the Plus R disks.
Two things that are Absolutes for me when burning a CD or DVD:
1. Shut down all running programs before opening my burning software.
2. I use nothing but "Nero Burning Rom" software and NEVER try to burn at the maximum speed printed on the CD.
(I never try to burn a CD at over 16x)
Following the above rules, I NEVER burn a coaster or get a refusal to burn from "Nero".
Good Luck and happy computing!

| Sorry to contradict you DOC but the +/- thing only applies to DVD's the CD's are all the same. - but the point is valid as to making sure you have the right stuff. |

By experimenting I found the answer to my own problem. After getting the error message that there was no writable CD in the drive, I rebooted and tried again. Then it would work normally.
Thanks for all your input. |

Strange as it may sound, in M$ troubleshooting training, rebooting is one of the things they tell you to do first. - go figure...
Glad to hear you got it. |

I stand corrected.....it IS DVD and not CD.
But critical, none the less!
Even certain brands of burners seem to prefer certain brands of disks.
thanks tux, (glad to have you watching my back )

No problem!
Working together is what makes this forum work. Beside I have given false info by mistake, too (corrected it as soon as I realized it - or pointed out) & I DO NOT like doing so as I feel it only adds to the persons confusion. - I've even marked a few comments "correct me if I'm wrong" as I wasn't sure...I have to ask questions on here myself at times & want the right answer. I expect that people come here believing that they WILL get the right answer so I don't want to disappoint them & have them think ill of the forum. & ABOVE ALL, I will NOT belittle anyone for the honest answers they give. |

This sounds like it's a problem with the computer detecting that there's a CD in the drive, which could be a general Windows issue (sometimes Windows CD software hasn't noticed that the CD is in there), or the Laser in the drive could be misaligned slightly, or it could be dust or a poor CD. Or it could be a loose CD cable.
You don't need to assume it's the ( admittedly rubbish) Windows CD burning software, or even the cheap Cds. Lots of people use both all the time.
A freeware CD burning suite or a free trial could eliminate the software angle.
Investing in a couple of good CDs would eliminate the Cd angle. |

True a dirty drive can cause grief as well - but I was referring to the REALLY cheap stuff with names (usually) never heard of. The ones that figure out to a few cents a disk. Very poor materials are used & very poor Q.C.
I thoroughly maint my computers on a regular basis (as should everyone) & had almost the same thing. Difference being I use commercial burning software instead. My problem was cured when I got some decent media. But this isn't to mean that even the name brands can't have some bad ones in it now & then. & drives ARE prone to go bad as well.
BTW: I took repair classes (back went 486's 1st came out) on this kind of stuff. You will be amassed at what it takes to actually fix this stuff. - but alas, it is all "throw away" now-a-days. Cost more than it's worth to fix it now. |
