i knows there were some of you out there betting on it.
so whom ever picked this month and year for it to happen.

ya won almost got to next month. but did not make it.

what in the world am i talking about, those of you that are new
to the forums are asking..

well here is what happend.

my win98 system is down. yep its down. the software is good.

but last dec. i noticed the cooling fan stopped and i heard a growling noise. so i been trying to change out mother boards thinking it was time to get a faster cpu and stuff. well the win98se mb i had been trying to get in wont work it just wont allow anything to install. either the mb or the old w98 OS wont work with the win98 Se mb. but i took it back out of the system and put the old win98 mb in with all the isa slots on it.
started it up and was going good for a full 17 hours straight. Smile

it was having a hard time of doing anything and then when i tried to reboot. it wont reboot the mem test stops at low mem. count of 13524 k that is not anywhere near the amount of ram which is 224 mb's of ram i cant get it to do anything i did get in to the bios. but nothings wrong in there. so it has to be the old mother board with the isa slots on it. looking it over. there are two cap's that are bulging on the top so the x is split just a little. it seems i had enough cooling fans to keep them from going completely but they did blow. Sad

so if you bet the software ya lost if ya bet the hd. ya lost.
but if you bet the old mb you got it. Cool

now i got to find another win98 mb that is dog gone cheap. cause i still aint working. Shocked

I looked at your profile but it doesn't say where you are from. Can you get craigslist in your area?

http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/

This page also lists other States and Countries. You might be able to find something affordable in the For Sale, "Computer" category. Finding a 98 mb alone would probably be a long shot, but you might just find something you can take parts from.

I tried to just bring up craigslist.org but it brings me back to Indy all the time. Must be my cookies or something.

texas. Very Happy

yep i can get to that list. but i am just going to hit the brick and morter repair shops around here. i want to see the caps on the boards when i get one.

if i can't get one i'll just have to wait until i can get some money or a job and then money and buy a new os. and board.

i got most my programs backed up on cdrom but i did not get a chance to get all the tasks backed up but if i go new system i might just stop the 20 hour a day playing of music and make it a when i turn it on jukebox. Smile

G'day Keith -

You might also want to try contacting some of the local organisations that sell cheap PCs (or even give them away) to those who are not currently working. A lot of businesses are constantly upgrading their hardware, and they give away their "old" (usually only 2 or 3 years old) PCs to non-profit organisations who make sure they are in good working order before passing them on to those who need a PC but can't afford one.

You may not get a PC with all the bells and whistles, but at least it will keep you going until you are in a position to buy the one you really want. You could also then retrieve the data from the hard drive of your broken PC.

You don't need to think of it as charity - it's recycling still-useful equipment that would otherwise just be going into landfill or sold as scrap.

Cheers.

thank ya seaeagle.

but i have come to say HA!! you all lost the bet. Cool

here is what is the situation now?

strange as it might seem the system is working again with the old mother board..

i got the idea to put the old pent 2 266 hrz slot cpu back on the board. to see if by chance it would use that one.

and it did. so it seems the two blown caps are on the circit for the the faster pent 2 333hrz cpu. either that or the over night off let the caps cool down and my switching to the slower cpu let them work with out over heating?

not sure what all i know it i got it back to working so i got my tunes again. still i'm going to back up everything i have changed since the last back up, one scare is enough.

Hello,

I take it you are on another computer running a different operating system. Is that correct? If so, have you considered installing some virtual machine software and running Microsoft Windows 98 from inside of that?

yes this computer is winxp pro sp 3 but
i'm not talking about running win98 on a vrt.. mach.. Confused

the one in the other room is the win98. and is the one which i posted this thread about. and as an update the thing is still working as mentioned in the last post of mine? and i still don't know how it is working with the blown caps? but it is .

it is even doing the timed restarts and will shut off and turn back on by the power button, so those two caps must not be too important for the smaller cpu.?

i'm going to keep this win98 going as long as possible just back up more often.
its the first computer we bought and is really being worked. cant imagine what is allowing it to continue but i am glad it is.

Cowboy,

There is a lad over East who repairs MoBo's with capacitor issues, I believe his site is is www.badcaps.net email is admin.TakeThisOut@badcaps.net.

For a fee, a lot less than a new mobo or computer, he will replace all the elect. caps and do a burn in of your mobo, cpu, ram to make sure it's functioning correctly.

The fee is dependent on the MoBo, and shipping...check it out, you may be able to fix it easier than you think.

I was betting on the HW, btw... Cool

Cheers!

Sad very sad...they had a perfectly good OS and couldn't be happy, they want to be just like Apple OS X... Sad

If'n i wanted a g&^%$#@n apple, i'd buy one!!!!! F^%$!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Why, oh, why can't they listen to the user!!???!!!???!!!??? Sad

*Sigh*

Life goes on...Linux is on the horizon, getting closer to reality!!!

Guess I'll just have to FORGET playing those cool PC games, cause I ain't buying Vista...

And PS3 is still too expensive...so I'll stick with my older games and PS2!!!!

i can still find win98 installs some places. not many but a few are still laying around, used so they are more likely but still around.

xp will still be around to like that on the cheap discount bargin bins which is where i might beable to afford it.

its funny but i just got an email saying they are going to yank windows outlook express from their email servers and saying we have to get the windows live mail program to replace it.

the date is june 30th? kind of ironic isn't it?

For every dirty rotten trick that MS pulls on us......
There's a work-around! Wink

MS has NO control over Outlook Express, unless you're getting your email via Microsoft.
SO, STOP getting your email via MS.
Use the email service supplied from your ISP, or get Yahoo mail or even Google Mail (GMail).

Become independent of MS and tell them to "Shove It!".

I have an OS that works just great and I've shut off Auto Updates to keep it working great.

I'm not dependent on MS and their wiley ways to keep my computer running.
Why should anyone else be? Twisted Evil

Hello,

I would be unsurprised if Microsoft Windows XP continued to be available for some time after June, 2008. While it may not be available from all previous locations and in the same forms, it will, no doubt, be seen in the secondary market.

Keep in mind that there is a whole class of low-power devices such as UMPCs (like the Asus Eee subnotebook) which have comparatively slow CPUs and not enough memory to provide a good experience with Microsoft Windows Vista. For this class of devices, it would make sense for Microsoft to provide Windows XP, or possible some other lightweight operating system.

I noticed that Windows Home Server is available through OEM (System Builder) licenses, and it has very modest system requirements.

There are 2 conditions you should be aware of: 1. OS new copy availability time line; and 2. OS Support time line;

1. M$haft has set the deadline on New Win XP availability from the manufacturer as June 30, 2008.

2. Win XP support deadline has NOT been set as of this date. Which means that M$ will continue to offer Hotfixes and Service Packs, which will cover XP and M$ Server 2003, for the foreseeable future.

You will continue to see Win XP for sale from secondary sources and swap meets, until the supply runs out.

Bottom line, as soon as possible save your nickels and dimes to get your hands on XP Pro! Once you do that, then you will have support,,,

Best of luck, I know what being unemployed is all about, not fun at all...

Cheers!

Hello,

It is important to keep in mind that the June 30, 2008 date only applies to the retail and OEM-preload versions of Microsoft Windows XP. For UMPC's, the OEM preload date is extended to June 30, 2010, according to this article on Microsoft's web site.

I suspect that when most people talk about purchasing a copy of Windows XP, they mean an OEM version for System Builders, not a retail version, or a copy pre-loaded onto a computer. If you take a look at the this Windows Lifecycle page on Microsoft's web site, you will note that Microsoft actually will be selling System Builder licenses until January 31, 2009, or about another half-year past the end of June, 2008.

As far as service and support for Windows XP goes, a further dive into Microsoft's product lifecycle information reveals this page which gives the timeline for when extended support ends for Windows XP. Basically, that means when security hot fixes will no longer be provided by Microsoft. That date is April 8, 2014, or about six years from now. By that time, I suspect that not only will Windows 7 be out, but perhaps even its successor (Windows 8?) will either be shipping or in beta.

It will be very interesting to see in 2014 if there are a bunch of "Vista holdouts" exclaiming they won't upgrade their systems because they do not want to give up the speed, performance, stability reliability and wide availability of drivers and software for Windows Vista for whatever the current version of Windows is then.

i suspect ASUS had something to do with that. The next generation of the eeepc, model 900 will be released sometime in the next several months with a choice of XP or linux.
No one would buy the windows XP hardware if MS didn't offer a bit of support.

Aryeh,

I won't take that bet...we work so hard making our Windoze experience what WE want it to be, that it's really difficult to let something that works REALLY well go in favor of a new UNTESTED OS!!! I mean, come on, Vista was a beta that they foisted on new computer users!!!

There have been a nightmare of problems with it...plus a new GUI that is a memory HOG!!!

Not to mention those brave souls that 'upgraded' from XP...hardware drivers were NOT available for their current HW!!!!

Really poor planing on Micro$haft's part, but they wanted to beat the Apple OSX out the door...which loops back into my major complaint with Redmond...If I wanted a fricking APPLE, I'd BUY one!!! Stop trying to turn MY PC into an APPLE CLONE!!!

Ok, I'll quit now...they'll never listen anyway...

Linux is looking better-n-better!!! They just have to get a few more pieces of software converted and I will jump off the Windoze train...

Cheers, all! Shocked
