hey all

here is what i am trying to do

isp ---- wrt54g wireless ++++ comp #1 ----- [
____________________+_____________[
______________________+ + comp #2 --- [ befsr41
__________________________________[
_________________________comp #3 --- [

------- = wired
++++ = wireless
____ = ignor just for spacing

i have comp #1 and comp #2 hooked to the wrt54g wirelessly
i can hook up the three to the befsr41(wired) if i disable wireless cards in comp #1 and comp #2

problem is if i hook up wired and enable wireless both routers use same ip 192.168.1.1
comp #1,#2,#3 are side by side by side with the befsr41 sitting on top of them and the wrt54g 150' away
comp#3 is back up comp and test rig so dosnt need the net

how do i fix this?
thanks mike

Buy a switch and use it instead of a second router. (EZXS55W)

Depending where the modem is, close to the computers or 150 feet away, will determine where to put the switch.
You said the three computers are side by side.

Modem is 150 feet away from the location of the computers.
Connect the switch to the modem and run an ethernet cable from the WAN port of the switch to WRT54G. Connect the 3 computers either wired or wireless to the WRT54G.

Run a 150 foot ethernet cable to the modem, connect the router to the modem and run a short cable (1 foot) from the router - any of the 4 ports to the WAN port of the switch. The switch can sit on top of the router. (I had mine that way when I needed additional router ports).

Hello,

I could not understand your drawing, but from your description and ZLim's comments, you might want to see if you can disable the routing and DHCP functionality on the BEFSR41 residential gateway to make it behave like an Ethernet switch.

However, as ZLim suggested, you would be best served by using an actual Ethernet switch to extend your network into the location you desire.

hey all
sorry zlim i cant move the router /modem as that is the public service for my community and i didnt think ya could run an Ethernet cable that long (im full of brain farts today cuz i work construction and i should of known better. cause iv seen em that long or longer opps Very Happy ) plus i would have to dig a ditch that long (no thank you on my off time as i work 8 hrs /7 days a week minimum)!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a man cave that i live in (best explanation) Cool as my cottage is about 500 square feet with kitchen and bathroom.

i set my wan address to 01.01.01.01
i set my lan ip to 198.192.100.1
left subnet mask alone

and holy sh++ it works

ok all
i thought this would be simple and it worked until i powered down for the night

zlim
it is over 200 foot if i run a cable(over head or buried)
yes my 3 computers are side by side but it is a community "net" connection so i am limited on what i could or can do to the router/modem
im trying to setup an ____intranet___ not an internet between just the three computers plus keeping the net connection for just the two computers (wireless) going
i have a 5 port switch as well and still no go even worse now as all computers show a yellow ! on the double computer by the clock even when i have the wireless disabled
im going to try and bridge the wirred and wireless together

i changed to my 5 port switch

ok i bridged the two together and the wired can kinda see each other(comp 1 and 2 see each other and comp 2 and 3 see each other but 1 and 3 do NOT see each other) and i still do NOT have the net on comp 1
but comp 1 nor comp 2 have the net they keep trying to go to the wired for the net

im going to enable all network connections (bridged) and go to sleep and see what happens in the morning

Hi, I don't quite understand what you're trying to do, but I'll pretend your problem is like one I just solved on my own system(s).

I have the normal cable modem coming into a 4 port wired router which A) servers my wifes PC and B) serves a switch. To this switch I have my PC, a Laptop, and an external backup disk and sometimes a network printer.

In the past, I tried hard to make the whole thing wireless but had too much attenuation due to solid concrete walls, but I left the TrendNet b/g/n card in my PC. Recently I got two more PC/s, intending to use them on vacation and leave my "main systems" home.

Long and short. I installed a Trendnet USB Wireless dongle on each of the new PC's. Big problem,. The "new" PC's would not connect to the external network via the PC with the wireless/wired connections. Big flash of thought!! BRIDGE!!

On my PC with both the wired and Wireless card, in Network, I set up a bridge between the wired and wireless connections as an "Ad-Hoc" network, since I do not have the Wireless router with me.

Works like a champ!! And since they are Wireless N, I think I am getting optimal data transfers between them.

The important thing to take away is the Bridge between the Wireless and Wired on one PC.

Oh yeah, all systems are Win XP.

Good luck,

Bob
