Well here's my dilemma for some unfathomable reason I seem to be unable to install any windows updates!
According to "Windows Automatic Updates" there are 18 updates downloaded and ready to install but when I attempt this
they all fail.
I have shut down all my protection (AVG Internet Security, WinPatrol, Trojan Hunter, SpyBot S&D. to no avail.
I then proceeded to the Windows update site and tried again but this time one at a time! Still no go.

This is a very recent reload of Windows XP pro about a month now and SP3. My quandary is the system runs great!
However not being one to leave a stone unturned it bugs me that there are security update available and I cannot install them.

As I stated earlier this is Win. XP pro. 2 gigs of ram, pentium dual core 3.0 and I'm stumped. Embarassed

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Ken! I was unable to make that particular fix work but this did. Your suggestion changed the way I was looking at this problem, thanks again Laughing

I had a "Windows Update Fix.bat" file on my FTP Download site for a long time, but since I never got a request for it, I deleted it to make room for more current files.

It did this:

Quote:
To fix the .dll issue, you will need to re-register a couple of .dll files. To do this, follow these easy steps:

* Run the command prompt by clicking on the Start Menu and selecting Run. Type "cmd" and hit Enter.
* In the new window that came up, type each of the following commands, hitting enter after each one:
o REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
o REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
o REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

Plus, it deleted old files as was suggested elsewhere.

Well, I'm glad you found the fix.

Congratulations!

Then I suppose that I should find that fix and put it back on my site.

Oh well.........

Hello,

Problems with the Windows Update service are often discussed in the forum. An earlier message thread on the subject, complete with a script to solve the problem, can be found here.

Thanks Aryeh,
Sometimes I think we will all be better off once Microsoft stops supporting XP Laughing
Once the problem was solved I was dismayed to find even some of my e-mail settings had changed and I use Thunderbird!
Patching XP is like trying to keep a screen door from leaking! Shocked

And, they've been patching it since the Windows 95 days, and they still don't have it fixed. (I.E.)

For most people, just shutting off auto-updates is the best thing.

That's what I do.

Cheers mates!

Thanks Aryeh for posting a link to the script method. Between the script and registering dlls, windows update should be repaired. I see many posts for this problem and very few solutions.

Hello,

I have come to the conclusion that any software complex enough to do useful things will require updating to fix bugs and add new features. The complexity of the computing ecosystem software gets thrown into virtually guarantees an incompatible environment will eventually evolve.

A while ago, I started working on a new version of the WUREPAIR.CMD script to add a line for the WUPS2.DLL file (not difficult) and support for 64-bit versions of Windows (more difficult) but never got around to finishing it. If there is interest, I'll look at tidying things up and releasing it.

Quoted from the article..
"If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem".

As a matter of interest, has anyone ever used the Troubleshooter and got a useful answer?

and this is where we come to heads.

this relying on the auto updater to get all your needed updates is WRONG, of course it is a missleading name because it only gets high priority and security updates,
the use of the windows update auto updates can of course be turned off i do this because i don't want the wasted bandwidth when i'm wanting to surf.
i do have it tell me of the new updates.
which i then go get them myself.
i've only had that one messed up update from them that was the one za. did not want to work with.

but what most people DON'T DO, is go to the windows update site and get the other updates that are needed,

if microsoft's computers check your computer and strongly suggest a recomended update you should more then likely get that, if it does not install then it is either caused by this error that started this thread, or you got a stuck hotkey saying you need it but you really already have it. so tell update site to never show you that again if you know you have already got it.

now of course i do have another error i just posted an new thread for, but how it happened i don't know but since i get all the updates manualy then it can't have been the auto update service.

also if you are still going to windows update then you need to click on the link there to microsoft updates, that is their better service. it will check all your files from M$ and tell you the needed updates for them and if you have any 3rd party programs on your system that those authors happened to tell M$ about updates to their programs then the micrsoft update site will tell you about those updates and go to their servers to get the update for you.,

so its better to use that update page.
Cool

as for your error i'm glad you got it fixed, but i just thought to tell you that try the program "RegScrubVistaXp" i found it on majorgeeks.com it has a deep file reg cleaner, and the free reg defragmentor.

the first time i used it i got over 600 errors in the registry and i've been running reg cleaners since win98 when i first got the computers. so you know i been running them on this xp pro. and they always said it was clean, but that one found 600 more that were never found by the others.

it is possible that a hotkey also might be sticking around causing troubles, there are times i can not get online for some reason the pages won't load or i can't get email. so i close the browser disconnect from the web, and run that regscrubvistaxp cleaner, connect to the web and i can surf to any site again and can pick up email. so that is proof enough to me that a sticking hotkey is messing up things.

Cool
