Hello, I'm new to Widows 7 & haven't figured it all out yet!

I have an HP laptop & thought I had the power saving done correctly but obviously I'm missing something.

If I leave the machine for no more than 20 minutes it shuts off! Not totally but the sign in screen comes up & I have to sign in again! I have tried adjusting the power savings but nothing changes so I put everything back the way it was.

Does anyone know how I can make this stop? The screen saver doesn't come on, it just shuts off.

One other thing. It shuts off even when I'm trying to run a virus scan so it hasn't had a full scan for a while, just quick scans.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

How do you run the laptop? Line power or battery power?

Have you disabled "Hibernate" yet? I do that the very first five minutes of an install.
Hibernate is unstable and always has been.

Then in power management, in the control panel, Set everything under Line Power to NONE. Make sure that if there is an "Apply" button on the bottom of the window, click it, before you close the window.

Reboot and your settings should be set.

Good Luck,

Well I did everything you said & tried to run a full virus scan today. It ran from noon to about 4pm then it shut down to the sign in page. Needless to say I can not do a full scan if it shuts off! When I signed back in it started the scan from the beginning instead of where it left off.

How the hell do I fix this?

Hello,

Try going into the Power Options in the Control Panel, and on the current plan, click on the Change Plan Settings option.

Set the Put Computer To Sleep option to a different value (an hour, Never, etc.).

Well goretsky we'll give that a try! The only time is doesn't shut down is if I'm using it! I would have thought when it was running a virus scan it would know it's being used but that doesn't seem to be the case!

I am not fond of Windows 7! I can't get my music to play and lots of other things that are supposed to be so much easier! I really dislike it!

I did what you said & left it running while I had my morning tea and read the paper. After about 20 minutes it shut off to the signin screen! I'm running it plugged in all the time not battery which I could see it doing to save the battery life but it's not on battery!

Any other suggestions.?

The more I read of this thread, the more it points to the SCREENSAVER. It is probably set to give you a "blank" (black) screen, log you out & lock the system. Check there & I'll bet you'll find just what I said. (& what you are looking for)

(at least that is the very first place I'd be looking if I were working on that computer)

This link gives a picture of what I'm referring to:
http://www.gocomputertraining.com/windows-7-screen-saver.html
& by default, your setting should match the picture to NOT have your problem.

Check ALL the power stuff too...

I did have a chat with HP because my computer is still under warranty. They had me download and install a bunch of Bios updates and then we waited 20 minutes and it didn't shut off. I check out what you told me as well. It seemed to be working great until I woke it from the screensaver. I went back yous suggestion and found I had login after screensaver still checked so I corrected that and viola! Works greayt! Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you Goretsky and Baby_Tux

It COULD have been BIOS related, but for ME, BIOS updates are a VERY LAST RESORT of a desperate man!
(& I only had to do one ONCE - that was back when there was NO WAY OUT if anything went wrong. So it was bullet sweating time, for sure)

Glad to see you got it though...

I was worried about the BIOS update but since it was HP tech support I did it! So far so good!
