| Try going to PC World's downloads page ... there are quite a lot there to chose from ... worth having a look. Sorry I don't have the page address but put a search in one of the search engines for pc world.com (I think that is it) and take it from there.
Take care, hope you find what you're looking for.

Hi... Replicator is free and easy to use... no spyware or any problems that I've ever found (been using it for a year). You can download it free from here
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp
Have a good day. |

| Karens Replicater is a great utility. By the way,in my opinion goung from ME to XP isn't an upgrade. My windows me has been running for 4 years,While my xp home edition has been running for only about 6 hours. Why? Because I had to reload my system again for the 5th time in 9 mos. Maybe I just got a lemon. When you finally conver to windows xp don't forget to make a copy of your cds just in case you accidentaly damage 1, thereby rendering the system usless when it goes down( and I can guarantee you that it will) or in case that you have to reload a device driver etc. Good luck with your pc and hope to see you again on this forum. If you need help you have come to what I would call the most helpful and knowledgeable people on the network. |

Hello,
The topic of backup tools and strategies is one which frequently comes up in the forums. You can view some of the earlier message threads here, here, here and here.
Perhaps one of the solutions mentioned will meet your needs.

I ran across this one today from www.techsupportalert.com Newsletter (worth the subscription) >>

| Excellent Free Backup Program Thanks to subscriber Brock Keckritz for letting me know about Cobian backup V5, an open source Windows backup utility with some advanced features including multi-threading and the ability to run either as an application or a Windows service. It will backup to other partitions, drives, network devices and to FTP either on demand or according to a schedule. Zip compression is supported. Alas, it won't backup to CD or DVD, but that aside it's an impressive product well suited to many folks’ data backup needs. Freeware, 4.3MB. http://www2.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cbu5.htm |

Also check with CNET for a free one. Use system restore as a backup method every day.

I have used Karen's Replicator, but I have found Syncback (freeware) is much more efficient with excellent support.
I use this program to backup to CDRW and USBpen drive, compiling complete profiles for each disc. These, in turn, can be backed up, which makes it worth the effort. Once you have set it up, it is much easier to operate than Karen's Replicator.
Hope that this helps...

If you have access to a machine already running XP you could possibly use the files and settings transfer wizard provided in XP. You'd need to create a transfer wizard disk on another XP machine and run the wizard on the ME machine, creating the needed backup file. Then after installing XP on the ME machine run the wizard to install your saved settings and files to it. |

A good Back-Up program, and getting better with Version 6 coming soon is at Luis Cobian's Site. I've used this it is "FREE" and it's a pretty good back-up program. |

Before upgrading ME to XP.....stop,,,,,take a deep breath and then take a good look at what you've already got. Does your hardware meet the XP compatibilities list? Do you have at least 256 megs of RAM and a 40 gig hard drive? Do you have at least a 1000mhz CPU, or better? Preferably much better.
Lastly and most important, have you just tried to clean up your ME machine before considering loading an operating system ten times the size of ME?
It will slow your old computer down to about half speed, or less.
I clean up ME machines all the time and the result is usually a much better running PC.
If you think you absolutely MUST do it, get ahold of a new 40 gig HD and replace your old HD with the new one. Put your old HD in an anti-static bag and put it in a safe place for future use, then load XP on the new drive. Be ready to download updated drivers for much of your hardware. you may even need to replace certain pieces of hardware where XP drivers are not available. When I put XP on my 98/SE machine, I had to replace my scanner, modem and sound card.
XP is designed for NEW, powerfull PC's.....not old tired ones. Think Twice before you leap into XP.
Good Luck,
TheShadow  |

I once asked this forum for help on a Free Backup Utility and got the reply to look at the various posts that had already been logged.
Does anyone think it would be a good idea for someone to do an FAQ on this subject so that the surfer can go immediately to the answer without having to search?

A free and easy to use backup utility is CopyRite XP created by David Kendrik.
It is based on Microsoft's own Robocopy and features "A handy GUI that unleashes the power of Microsoft's Robocopy." It's a great utility provided you have the HD space as it
does not provide compression. It's easier to use than Karen's Replicator, although her program is really good also.
Best features of CopyRite XP is speed, easy retrieval of all files, and easy incremental backups.
You can find CopyRite XP here with instructions and link to download free Robocopy:
dkendrick.TakeThisOut@copyrite.dynu.com
Enjoy!
