Hello,
I recently received an update from Microsoft for Windows Defender and the net framework that they automatically installed on my firefox browser. This update was supposed to allow me to uninstall the original update that was not wanted.
I chose to download only the Defender update. When I shut my computer down for the night before it shut off the blue screen said "installing update 1 of 1" !! Why did this happen?? It has never done it before.
The next day I looked in the Add-ons section of firefox and the original install was gone!!
I had found a way to disable it, probably here somewhere, so it wasn't even working.
How is it possible for Microsoft to just install something that I don't want?
I have my update set to ask first just so this doesn't happen.
I use windows xp home.
Thanks for the info |

| It would help to know which version of windows you are running.
Sometimes, Windows update will download update files that can only be installed during a shutdown. In WIndows XP, this manifested as a new option on the shutdown list "install updates and shutdown". In Vista, we see it as a change to the red "suspend" button we see when we click the Windows logo icon. In Vista, you may also sometimes see a message during start up that updates are being installed.

I did note that I use XP Home but guess you missed it
Were would I find said " Install updates and shutdown" option?? I would like to turn that off if I can.
The thing that bothers me is that I didn't approve of any install in the first place. I have it set to ask first before installing anything so I can see if I want or need it.
It makes me mad that Microsoft just presumes that I want another of the brilliant ideas installed on my computer. |

In my opinion it is is everyone's best interest to turn off automatic updates on any piece of software, whether it be windows or anything else your running, and just do it manually.
That way YOU decide what updates you want, if any.
This is also a good way of keeping track of what is installed on your system, so if anything goes wrong you know where the problem came from

I use xp pro with a modded sp3, as after using vista home - ultimate and windows 7 on test comps, I bothers me a lot that vista and 7 are just over-bloated graphical garbage. |

| It may be the new version of "Net Framework" or XP Home. I use XP Pro, and have no problem like this. I just "rebuilt" my daughter's computer (XP Home), and during the Microshaft updates, Net 3.5 was installed. I noticed the next day that they had the "wait for shutdown" active. Unless you need Net 3.5 for some new software, I'd try removing (Add or Remove Programs), it, and just use Net 2.0. You can always put 3.5 back in if you need it! |

To my knowledge, you can't turn it off -- it appears only if an update has been downloaded and is ready for installation, but the update can only be installed during shutdown.

I'm not sure what Microsoft's current doctrine is regarding the force feeding of "critical" updates. My personal opinion is that there really should be two modes: (1) automatically download and install *all* updates for any product installed on the PC, regardless of severity, and (2) Don't even download anything -- let the user visit the download site and review what should be updated.
Mode (1) is for my mom -- she doesn't understand computers well, gets confused when offered choices about updates simply because she doesn't know (or know how to learn) if she needs an update, so she declines the update down to keep from breaking anything. I'd rather recover from a bad patch than a virus or spyware. And really, how many tragically flawed patches have been released recently?
Mode (2) is for computer geeks that understand what's happening under the hood or paranoid types who think the updates are a mechanism to spy on them.

I don't want M$ force-feeding me anything. NEVER!
So I just shut off Auto-updates and that solves that problem.
You can do it from the Control Panel, or just run "Services.msc" , scroll down to Windows updates and right click it, click Properties and put it in Disabled mode.
End of problem.
Do a manual update once a month and then only select the updates you want.
Cheers Mates!
