SONY should be able to repair this out of warranty at no charge to you because the work would essentially be charged back to nVidia.

I've just had a look at the Sony Viao forum..........and discovered a topic with about 11 pages on it.......most of whom appear to have the same problem. Sony however appear to be in denial. The typical response from sony looks like......Vaio isn't affected by this problem, we can repair your laptop but it will cost £200 for pick-up delivery and diagnosis, plus another £700 for repair.
I'll see what luck I have.........not holding my breath though |

Another thought: Since this had been an on again off again proposition, the real probem may not be a broken chip. It may just be a chip that is making bad connection to its socket (if it is socketed) and excessive heat often causes/exascerbates this. Furthermore, adding some thermal compound to the heat sink may help. This is not something that you yourself would probably know how to do, but there is certainly a local geek who would love to do it. I have done this on desktop motherboards with success, so it isn't rocket science. Laptop motherboards are a bit trickier. On the other hand, my Dell laptop has a socketed graphics apparatus and your computer might also. And the local geek will certainly be less expensive. If he fails, you can still spend big bucks to get it fixed. Or, better yet, buy a new refurbished computer at half the cost of fixing the old one. |

Hello,
The video chip is mounted to a logic board using bumps of solder arranged in a grid beneath the GPU chip. Since the GPU is soldered directly, there's no socket to try and reseat it in.
There is a gentleman in the UK who repairs notebook comuters which have this type of problem. It is discussed in a message thread here in the ThinkPads.com forum (a site run by a ThinkPad reseller; not Lenovo's official ThinkPad user forum).
You might want to contact him and see if have can provide some suggestions.

thanks goretsky......that contact is much appreciated.
Just for info: I've taken the ram out and replaced it with identical components from another Vaio vgn fz21s which I know is ( at least currently!) in working order.
it didn't help. |

I have read through this whole thread and belive that i have the same problem as you and i intend to find out more about this overheating problem as i think that it may well be the cause, the laptop used to run fine then started to crash then only crashed with the strange lines and characters on the screen when i used somthing that would strain or cause the graphics card to work hard. i am interested also in this theory of the graphics card comming away from the mother board because i have a backup card on my laptop a default that runs with my Nividia 8600 and this too has the same problems making me think that it has come away from the board. Anyone have anyideas how to check this or see if it is this type of issue.
thanks for your help so far guys and thanks for starting this feed |

And then........... NEVER buy another Sony computer.
Sony has run their name right into the crapper, with poor service, inferior hardware and putting rootkits on their music CD's.
They have rightly earned a high spot on my schmitz list.
Good Luck,
The Doctor |
