Hello

Need some advice from you experienced "old hands" out there.
I want to connect an old pc running WIN NT workstation ver 4.0 to my home LAN that has XP machines connected.
The XP machines can see all the shares on the NT box without any problems but the NT box can't see the shares on the XP machines, It does see their respective names though but won't list any of the shared files, even when all firewalls in the network are disabled.
I believe I remember something about NT being finicky as to who has access to what in a network, but all the details are lost to me.
If anyone still remembers I would appreciate some advice

I don't know if this applies to NT but from setting up 2K, which is NT 5, on 2K, I had to keep checked IPX/SPX NetBIOS, which you would normally disable.

Here is something for 2K and XP. It might work for NT and XP

Make sure that all of the userids and passwords are identical on both PCs.

If userid YOU is on the NT machine and userid ME is on the XP machine, then add user YOU to the XP machine and add user ME to the NT machine. Reboot both PCs and try the connection.

To be clear, you do not have to be logged on as the same user on both PCs, but the logged on user must "exist" on the other PC. You's password must be the same on both PCs, also ME's password must be the same on both PCs..

Hello,

Perhaps the LAN Manager Authentication Level is set differently on the computers, which prevents the older computer running Microsoft Windows NT from successfully accessing shares on the computers running Microsoft Windows XP.

Microsoft TechNet has this article on what the different LmCompatibilityLevel values in the registry do, and there is also this excellent article in Jesper Johansson's blog explaining how it works.

Thank you all for taking an interest!

Zlim: You pointed me in the correct direction. When I changed the NetBIOS setting to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" it all works

MDGnome: Thanks for your input. Hower the conditions you mention were already in place., still it didn't work because of the NetBIOS setting.

Goretsky: Thanks for the leads. However it seems that the Tech Net article refers to the registry in Win2000. I couldn't find the registry item referred to in my machine. So I left my LmCompatibilityLevel setting unchanged. But since it now works I really don't mind.

Once again, I really appreciate the effort made by you guys!
