Ok, this is probably a stupid question and I could probably find the answer by googling RSS, but hey, I'm lazy. I created a blog recently and as an afterthought went had a syndicated it to RSS. I didn't think it'd ever get used but far more people read my posts through RSS aggregators than over the website. I've never used these aggregators or anything before, so I don't know anything about them. Is it possible to "skin" the RSS output so it appears similar to a webpage? I'm assuming not, since RSS is just an XML output, but I'd figure I'd ask. I hate to design all those great graphics and website layouts and then never have anyone see them ;-)

Unfortunatly there is no way to do that at this stage of RSS's life. The content gets displayed however the feed reader wishes.

Bradsoft's FeedDemon has styles users can download to change the view of the blog entries. You could make one and encourage your viewers to use it.

There is a post on mezzoblue about using XSL to make a basic layout in case someone clicks on the RSS link. Unfortunatly browser support for that is not very good and it does not transfer to the users feed reader.

That's 'bout it.

One of the things people like most about RSS is that it is lean, and devoid of web developer influence. like skinning.

From AdmiralJustin

  • RSS is not spammable
  • RSS generally contains fewer images, making it better for those still on dialup.
  • Most feeds are text only, or minor formatting.  Less ads.
  • With an aggregator, one can obtain updates to a variety of sites within seconds as opposed to manually loading each page in a browser.

In the future you will more than likely have style sheets that download with the feeds so you can make the XML look the way you want. I haven't tried it myself but inline style sheets might work now with some readers, emphasis on the Might and some. This of course assumes you have control of the feed output, and since it is a Blog I doubt it.

Hmm, maybe I should try this.

Awasu displays whatever you provide in the or or tags. So if you have some HTML in there, it will display. It's not exactly in the spirit of RSS but there are quite a lot of feeds out there that do this.
