A quarter of US PCs infected with malware: OECD - Security - Technology
Quote:
An OECD study into online crime says that increased activity by cyber criminals has left an estimated one-in-four US computers infected with malware.

The report, entitled Malicious Software (malware): a Security Threat to the Internet Economy, gives an impression of two worlds engaged in an uneven war of virus invasion and belated defence.

Cyber crime, to steal data, spy and attack government and business computer systems "is a potentially serious threat to the internet economy," the study, published on Friday, warns.

Organisations involved in "fighting malware offer essentially a fragmented local response to a global threat," the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development says.

"Over the last 20 years, malware has evolved from occasional 'exploits' to a global multi-million-dollar criminal industry ... Cyber criminals are becoming wealthier and therefore have more financial power to create larger engines of destruction."

"It is estimated that 59 million users in the US have spyware or other types of malware on their computers," the OECD report said. (continues)

One thing I found very concerning was this paragraph further down the page about my country:
Quote:
However, a study by the Australian government in 2005 found that only one in seven Australian computers was protected by a firewall.

In my opinion, ISPs should be forced to cut off access to PCs which are not using a firewall. It wouldn't be hard to do - all they would have to do is ping for unprotected ports. Maybe an email to the customer to advise they need a firewall, with the threat of suspension of their service if not done within a certain period (say, 7 days).

A quarter? you say?
How about 99%?
Almost every new computer I visit, that's been on-line more than a day, has some form of malware on it.

Even a brand new PC, right out of the box will have some spyware on it, installed by the manufacturer. Wild Tangent Games is a good example.

There is NOT one of my customers who does not have at least AVG 8.0 FREE and Spybot S&D installed. I set AVG to update automatically every day that the computer is logged on and I go thru the entire updating and scanning process with each customer as well as I leave them with a full page of printed instructions for each program I give them.

Spybot doesn't update automatically, but the process is easier than playing a game of solitaire or hearts. Wink

It they get infected it's only through their own dang'd laziness.!!!!

Firewall?
There's NO reason in the world why any PC running XP/SP2, or Vista, should not be protected behind a firewall.
It's a part of Windows. Exclamation
It's FREE! It requires NO setup and NO operator intervention. It don't git no simpler than that! Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation Very Happy

Saying that Spyware is running rampant, is just saying that stupidity is running rampant.
But, we already know that......don't we? Laughing Laughing Laughing
We see it every day!

On this and dozens of other forums, day after day and week after week, we tell people over and over again, what programs to get and run to keep their PC's malware free. I've even posted my entire list of Security Software on this very site, like, over and over again. Confused

And daily, someone comes in complaining of some Adware/Spyware infection on their PC.
There's another such post on this very forum today.
I'm almost to the point of just ignoring them. Twisted Evil

Thanks for the post. Velly intelestink!

Seaeagle,
It's interesting that you post information about US computers and say nothing about your own....that is PC's in Australia.

What's chances that those PC's are infected too?
I'd bet my life on it!

Comments?

Hello,

The actual report (found here) cites a 2005 Pew/Internet study from 2005. It gives a figure of 43%, though, not the 25% Seaeagle cited. The discrepancy is likely in how the article was reported to Seaeagle, though.

I do not know if anyone has great visibility into the malware population in Australia--Microsoft might have some idea of the scope from telemetry from tools such as the Malicious Software Removal Tool, customer reports, et cetera, and AusCERT has their 2006 survey available here for review, however, I'd be cautious about quoting the figures directly without looking at the methodology in more detail.

Nothing I have seen or heard leads me to believe Australia's malware issues are strikingly different than those in North America or Western Europe.

Since I'm sure that Australia has the same type of PC's as the rest of the world and probably from the same Manufacturers, then I also have to conclude that those new PC's come out of the box with the same crap on them as PC's delivered in the US.

There is NOT one new PC that I don't have to remove some kind of Crapware from.
So in light of that finding, I'd have to say that the malware infection rate is not 25% or 43% but a whopping 100%.

How's that grab ya?

Happy Halloween

Hello,

Business PCs--the kinds sold through catalog sales or over the web, not those sold to consumers or at retail--do not typically have the various trial/crap/junk/{insert your name here} ware on them. Also, the same for PCs sold into specialized markets, like gaming, digital A/V editing, medical imaging and so forth.

It is possible for people to buy those same computers, however, they may have to spend a little more on them as they are typically sold with faster processors, more RAM, larger hard disk drives and other higher-profit components.

One thing I have not looked at recently are any of the store-brand computers from companies such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Frys, MicroCenter and so forth. I did read a review of one a earlier this year that said one contained no third-party software other than anti-virus, which sounded like a good way for them to differentiate their brand over the others.

The clinker there is the "Anti-Virus".
The only brands currently installed by the main manufacturers is either McAfee or Norton. Both are second rate for keeping a computer safe and both qualify as "Bloatware".

When I'm setting up a new PC, either of those get the AXE! Exclamation Exclamation
I even saw one PC that came with BOTH !!!! Now, it don't get no worse than that! Twisted Evil
I carry the McAfee Removal Tool and the Norton Removal Tool with me on my Utilities CD, on every call.

Happy Halloween everyone!
