B"H
Hi! My oe6 is not working. here is the sequence of events and error message I get when trying. While away from my pc I checked email via web, there was an email in my spam folder which was titled with a familiar name of a relative, (no attachments), so I opened it and it was blank. When I got home I downloaded my emails in OE6, the next morning I was not able to download and I got the following message:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C013A

so I deleted that email I mentioned, but still had the problem. I renamed the inbox and the sentbox and still have the same problem, additionally, OE does download a few emails when I open it but it's copies of several emails, repeats.

Any ideas? I've searched and searched but havent' yet found a solution.

Thank you

Idea You could try using a better mail program like Thunderbird, or you could read this Here

Hope this helps.

Hello,

This sounds like a problem with Microsoft Outlook Express' settings, but just in case it is not, try accessing your Yahoo! Mail account via a web browser and moving all the messages from the inbox into a new folder, then exit and try running Outlook Express. Do you still receive the same error message?

I tried emptying the folder and indeed the error in OE does not appear. So that means that there are problem emails?

Just my Opinion but I think OE is a terrible piece of software. I switched to Thunderbird a few years ago and have not have one single bit of trouble with it, ever. No cryptic error messages. Simple to set up. Does anything OE can do. Updates itself. And you can Theme it and customize it like FireFox.

It looks as though OE is set to store copies of your e-mails on the server, hence its re-downloading 'old' 'mails - I agree with goretsky in that your OE settings may be the issue.

I suggest that you go through them again before looking elsewhere.

I may be completely wrong and I apologize if I sound condescending , but if you opened a blank message, in your spam folder, with a familiar name to it, with a blank message in the body, that it just maybe a virus? This might be the reason it is not working at home. I get crap spam with all kinds of variations of my name or relatives and since they are in the spam folder, they are there for a reason. I don't trust a folder dedicated to spam. I don't know what virus scanner you or the remote pc has, but I would update it then run a full system scan, if you haven't done so already.

But seeing as you sent it from a remote pc, then it might be the cause of your problems, I dunno...

I have no clue as to why it won't work on yours at home. Sounds like the flu to me.

Your POP settings might be wrong in your OE as this is the case for many people, just a little trial and error is all. I guess copy and paste the one from the Yahoo page to be extra sure.

Also, done it in the past, but you probably don't need to set up a POP account to receive mail unless you plan on keeping it bc I don't think you can send SMTP via Yahoo anyway. Unless they have changed it, it wasn't feasible when I tried the same thing eons ago.

Hope everything works out okay and I hope I didn't push any buttons. If so I sincerely apologize. I am no expert, just thinking rationally is all.

Off track a bit, but I currently use Outlook. Does Thunderbird cover the same bases as Outlook? If so, new mail client for me...lol

Oh, sorry, just re-read your original post and missed the part where you mentioned you read from a remote pc. I tried to reword my above post to hopefully correct my stupidity. Better yet, could a mod please just delete this response as it is just plain dumb

ThunderBird is more like OE than Outlook, but with Extentions you can add Calendar functions, and other stuff to make it more like Outlook. I like as well how you can Theme the appearance and how it's generally more secure.

Thanks for the reply AD. By any chance do you, or anyone else, know of any program other than M$ Outlook? I o like the features Outlook has but M$ security is not to be desired so third party apps are probably better. I need something to be able to import my address book and so on and so forth from Outlook. Any suggestions?

Seems like i started a different thread not unintentional to the original thread. I guess until we hear feedback from when he gets back home that this might be a good topic to discuss seeing as Thunderbird was mentioned earlier in this thread, so I don't think it to be too off topic though. Correct me if I am wrong tho...Thanks

Hello,

I would suggest accessing your Yahoo! Mail account with a web browser and moving a few messages back at a time into your inbox and then downloading them via Outlook Express until you come across the problematic message. Perhaps someone sent you a very long message or a message with some sort of prescribed file attached to it which is causing an error to occur during the message transfer.

Like I said previously with the right extentions like their 'Lightning' calendar you can import all settings, messages, addressbooks, etc into Thunderbird from most other mail apps. I have done so. For me Thunderbird has replaced Outlook fine, and it integrates well with FireFox, even sharing some Themes so they have the same appearance for colours, Icons, etc.

Me, I like that kinda thing. I have never had any real complaint about it, and since it cooperates well with my Email Scanner had never been infected either. I find Outlook bulky and cumbersome, with too much I don't really use. And of course it is legendary for Security problems.

Check it out for yourself, read up on it and decide it it's for you. You can always install it, try it and if you don't like it uninstall it, as long as you don't get rid of Outlook before you're sure you are ready.

1.Try eprompter from http://www.eprompter.com
look at the headers and delete the messages from "spam sources"
Send messages, but ensure/check the copy goes to your mail client OE/outlook. etc.

2.Yahoo mail cannot be received in OE if mailID is abc @yahoo.com.
Allowed if @yahoo.co.in . No idea about @yahoo.co.uk etc.

3. Any suspect email with inset photos, attachments forward to Yahoo Mail ID and scan there. Or use the POP acct facility in YM. Have not checked up Google mail.

Same problem I also had recently , and my ISP confirmed that they were releasing suspect messages stored in their Spam filter, after verification, and advised me to delete them . Check with your ISP.

Para two : Other IDs like YM Gmail : Use their own web sites, for the present.
Understand you cannot forward/send from OE emails ( without opening them ) to your Yahoo account
1. If you cannot receive email in OE with ID assigned by your ISP ,
and cannot send please check up the settings again.
Reference :
http://www.dataone.in/en/dataone_mail_configuration.html

2.You have not confirmed how eprompter program worked.
You could try one or two ID's .

3. All your email folders of OE are stored in .*dbx folders
In OE options/maintenance store folder.
Check up the suspect email is there or not.

4. Regarding Yahoo mail I cannot Use OE to send/receive with Yahoo ID.
but gmail working fine. Generally you can receive emails to any of your ID's in OE, but CANNOT send mail.
Say my Id is essbebe.DeleteThis@abc.com my ISP is abc
I cannot send mail with Id essbebe.DeleteThis@xyz.com
( Gmail is an exception, and may be YahooMail. HotmailID can be programmed) to receive/send in OE. Never used/ tried it.

thanks, I already did delete the problem emails so I don't need eprompter. also I used OE with yahoo for years and years so it's not like it's a new thing, and I never had this problem...

within the maintenance folder it only gives the option to delete messages or headers, not to look through the messages, in any event I did rename the dbx files eons ago...

,
After about two weeks and 15 postings to your problem with OE,

can you please specify what is the present situation.
1. You cannot receive Yahoo mail In OE.
2. You cannot send emails in OE.
3. You cannot receive emails in OE.
4. You receive all old emails in OE.
5. You cannot forward emails to your Yahoo acct.
6. Everything is perfect with OE as it was for eons.
7. All your settings perfect in OE
8. You want to read the mails from the *.dbx folders.
9. None of the above.

thanks for caring!

I cannot send nor recieve email on OE. I get the same error that is posted in the opening post. No email downloads at all. I am not an OE newbie having used the program for years but this error has stumped me. I have deleted and re-entered my account, copying the settings from the yahoo site, I have renamed the dbx files etc etc to no avail.

Sometimes, I land in trouble " carrying coal to NewCastle "!.
Cannot assume anything and sometimes very ordinary questions are
asked. But the intention is to learn/help and solve the problem somehow.

Usual advice for this will be :Run Antivirus/Anti malware programs, ( after disabling SR and in Safe mode )or ask for a Hijack log to analyze the problem , or reinstall OE.
1. Have you updated your XP OS till date ?
2. As OE is part of IE , it is possible to download a fresh version of IE and try.
3. Start run ( type cmd ) type sfc /scannow ( note space after sfc )
Keep the XP cd ready. All system files will be checked.
4 .I think a System Restore earlier to feb 9th may not be available.

Unfortunately, re-installing Outlook Express (and, by extension since they always seem to come in pairs, Internet Explorer) is often not so easy an undertaking. As a program that comes with Windows, starting with a fresh installation of Outlook Express would usually mean starting with a fresh installation of Windows. Not a place you want to go, right?Reinstall Outlook Express (and Internet Explorer)

Fortunately, you can install a new copy of Outlook Express if you can make Windows believe that what you install is a new version, or apply the latest service pack that contains a full install of Outlook Express again. This will mean different things on different systems, so make sure you get the right download and install the right version

What's the status of this problem?

Romana, you're using the premium, i.e. not-free, version of Yahoo! Mail, right? Apparently, you are, since the basic/free version does not work with POP mail.

As a test to verify you have no deep-rooted problem in OE itself, you might create a free Gmail account, which can be configured for POP mail, and see whether OE works right with it.
