This is not really a laptop problem, but is likely to come up more often in the laptop world.
My laptop has keys on top for DVD drive control, as well as for changing the sound volume.
I have a wireless Logitech keyboard that has similar keys. Thios keyboard works perfectly for all keys with my desktop. Occasionally, I use the wireless keyboard with the laptop by using a PS/2 to USB converter. This is particularly handy for control when doing presentations far from the laptop itself.
Anyway, the whole keyboard works properly with the laptop except the volume control and CD/DVD control keys. I suspected the USB connection, so I tried using the PS/2 USB converter with my desktop where I usually use the wireless keyboard. And the volume and DVD keys don't work then either. So the problem is clearly in the PS/2 to USB interface. Or in the Windows driver for a USB keyboard.
Here is the question: How to get a wireless keyboard volume control to work with a laptop that only has a USB port and not a PS/s port. |

Hello,
It would probably help to use a wireless keyboard that comes with a native USB adapter, just to rule out issues with a PS/2 to USB adapter incorrectly translating a keyboard scan code for one of the "nonstandard" multimedia keys.
Annother possibility is that there could be a conflict with the software used to monitor the multimedia keys on your notebook computer's keyboard and the software used to monitor the multimedia keys on your external wireless keyboard.
Have you checked with the manufacturer of your notebook computer to see if they can recommend a wireless external keyboard whose multimedia keys interoperate with your particular model of notebook computer?

Dell agreed with us that the PS/2 to USB converter was the probable culprit. They offered their $80 keyboard as a solution. I said I thought it was too expensive.
I went to the local office supply store and got a very cheap USB wireless keyboard which works perfectly.
Thanks for the help.

Just Curious------ Did you install any special drivers that came with the new keyboard?
Most laptops have a whole bunch of drivers for their weird little keyboards and touch pads.

With the new cheap wireless USB keyboard I plugged it in and it worked immediately. I even did this at the store to verify that it would work, and it just worked. I think Windows must support USB keyboards. There was a CD with utility programs, etc and a utility for reprogramming some keys, but I didn't need/use it. |
