Hi,
I just bought a new laptop and I have tried a couple times to open documents (word and excel) from my email and I keep getting an error message. For some reason I can save the file and view it but I cannot just view it straight from my email. I was thinking it had to do with me having Works 2007 and the files perhaps being saved from Works 2003 but I am not sure. I have scoured the internet trying to find the solution but nothing seems to fit what I am looking for. There is a lot of information for problems similar to mine...like having works 2003 and not being able to open 2007 documents for which there is a compatibility download but nothing the same. There were also articles about having this issue with powerpoint files and it suggested editing the registry but nothing for excel or works. I'm getting a little frustrated so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

You mention Excel and "Works 2003" and "Works 2007". Is this actually "Microsoft Works", or "Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007"? What browser and e-mail programs are you using? Internet Explorer 8 will block opening some of these because of the problems they have had with virus's coming in with .xml, and .doc files from the net. |

Hi,
It is Microsoft Works not Word. I am using Internet Explorer (whatever the newest version is) and I use gmail...but I have also tried accessing the file from a friend sbcglobal account and it gave the same message.
As for the internet blocking it I do get a message asking if I want to allow it to open since it is unknown but I always allow it so I am not sure if that is the probblem.
What basically happens is when I get an email with an attached file and click on download a box pops up and I click on open. When I do this it acts like it is going to start Mocrosoft Works but instead it gives me an error messages that says: Cannot access the document (file name here). The document may already be open or it may be a read only document. The name and path may be invalid, the document may no longer exist or it may already be opened. If you run Works from a network, you may need to wait until someone else closes Works.
Hopefully this information will give you more insight into this matter...
Thanks |

Hello,
Have you installed all of the updates for Microsoft Works yet on your new computer, including the Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter?

From your description, it sounds like Works doesn't open to display the document. At first I thought Works opened, but the document in question didn't come up in the open Works.
A question: when you save the document and double click on it, does Works start properly and display the docment, or do you have to start Works, then get the document through the Works file requester?
What I am getting at is the possibility that Works is not properly entered in the registry, or is in a different location than the registry thinks it is, so cannot open it.
You might also look at the Tools/Internet options tab in IE. There may be a check mark somewhere that prevents opening files with Works. This could be under security, or programs or advanced tabs. |
