|
|
Hi.
Am using Vista Ultimate and have just installed IE8. I have unlocked the toolbars, placed my cursor to the left of each toolbar to show the handles but when I try to drag them to a different position nothing happens. Why?
Regards.

I don't know. When checking users there are only 2 listed. Myself and Public. How do I log on as Administrator.
Regards.

By design in IE 8, the toollbars can only be elongated or shortened left to right or made taller or shorter in height in the same position. You can't rearrange and move the positions of each section (i.e. the address/command bar can't be moved up to combine with the menu bar or moved beneath the tabs.
Any user can do this, btw, as like window resizing and moving, it isn't controlled by admin rights. |

But, but, but... that's what we (tinw) all want to do! Why have MS removed this functionality? It increases real estate & kills blank area. $DEITY-dammit, this is the main reason I'm sticking with 7 - & seriously considering jumping ship to FireCOUGHfoxCOUGH...! |

I hope that you don't cough yourself sick.
Over a hundred million of us are already using Firefox in complete exclusion of I.E. (anything) and loving it.
I use the I.E.Tab add-on to allow me to go to web sites that were shortsightedly written for I.E.

Also sprach Zarathustra*:
"FireCOUGHfoxCOUGH...!"
If you've never used Firefox then you really should give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised. If you have used it and didn't like it then try some other browser such as Opera or Google Chrome.
*I always wanted to use that somewhere. Thanks for the opportunity! |

Mike, most probably you've resolved this issue by now but I know exactly how you feel about the space issue, I've been there. IE8 toolbars can be modified as you plse although it is not obvious from within IE8 once opened.
For example to gain space by showing Favorites Bar as a cascading menu: - http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/show-ie8-favorites-bar-cascading-men...ain-scr You can then also eliminate a row in the toolbar area.
There are quite a few other IE8 handy tips there.
If you really want to adapt IE8 to yr liking enter "gpedit.msc" (w/o quotes) into the Run box from Start menu + OK. You will then be in Group Policy.
Select Computer Configuration > Administrative Components > Windows Components > Internet Explorer
Right-click on any setting option and select Properties, you will also see a detailed explanation there.
Should you apply any change/s and not happy with the result it is easy to revert because the "State" column cleary indicates which options changed. |
