okay here is what happened
i got hit by a trojan last week some time
it was found and removed.
but it did some damage as in removing the dun files and tapi files.
and a few other items had missing dll files.

this is fixed by recopying your old back up files from the archive file of i386, the trojan was not able to get in it so it had good files. my was 8 years old but the dun and tapi files still worked.

the other missing dll files would not work from that because of the update of sp3.

the trojan also removed hotkeys to the install back up made by the sp3 update so windows was not even able to find them in there, i thought it was removed too like the ones on the c drive had been. but it was not i guess it could not move between hd's? but the error messages were that it was missing files and to put the install cdrom back in to copy them from.
i did that and got told it was not the right cdrom.
that is strange to do but i did a search on the computer and found the missing file on the other drive in the sp3 back up.
so i copyied that one and pasted it in windows folder where it was looking for the other file.

then tested the program i wanted to use and found the program now works.

the trouble was the file to be replaced had to be the one from the sp3 update or the back up of the sp3 update. the ogrinal install cdrom one is rendered too old after you install the sp3 update.

that was not the reason for all the files just that one program so far. the dun and tapi did not matter they were 8 years old

so some you can copy from the i386 archive
and some you have to copy from the back up of the last sp install you did.

still there might be other items needed fixed and this link to another post thread has a good url to a free repair program.
one of the best programs i have seen so far.

so you might want to get it too. thanks goes to pcratail for the link. Laughing

As a general rule of thumb, when you do a service pack update, you virtually have a new OS & must treat it as such. Thus your original CD's MAY become virtually worthless. Now I say VIRTUALLY as you COULD still do SOME things with it as you found out.

I'm beginning to think that all the problems that the regulars on here are having, that we are making some new techs out of a bunch of you that weren't before. Be it direct or from other peoples problems. This site has even taught THIS old geezer a thing or two.

Very Happy

And BTW, thanks for the report. Always like feedback on what was found.

your welcome always glad to post reports of how things were fixed on my systems,

have been since 2000 or so ever since the old forum before every thing changed i was not too smart on tech stuff then but was able to post how i got 3d party programs to fix win98 which had tons upon tons of bugs and errors.

every since winXp there has not been much troubles just virus's and trojans, with a few old bugs trying to make a comeback, so xp has helped a lot.

but still glad to help any way i can. though i don't think i'll ever be a tech i've not had any schooling in this other then the hard knocks of windows, i'd like to be a tech right now cause theres one guy i know that is having a .....of a time getting rid of the trojan he got hit with. he can't delete it. no how no way not by even going in safe mode.
this guy is so old he makes the shadow look like a high school kid.
and this great man is trying to fix the computer on his own.
that says a lot to have that skill at his age. thats another message thread so i'll post it there.

In MY boot you really don't need the formal training to be a "tech", per say (although it helps) just the knowledge. That is why I said that. People here are getting the knowledge to fix a lot more than they once could.

Kudos of the guy, I have a friend, in his 70's that I'd say at least for general knowledge of computers is on par with what I know & he hasn't had any schooling in computers. Now when it comes to the more advanced admin stuff that is another story & thus where the schooling may pay off but he can understand what I throw at him if he has issues. Very little, if any, spoon feeding.

Now the other side of the coin; I've taken classes with those that make a box of rocks look like a genus! - no matter how much hand holding & spoon feeding they just didn't get it. Had one guy that ALWAYS fried every computer component he got his hands on because he just couldn't resist the temptation to mess (& I DO mean MESS) & deliberately fry things. Gave me and another guy something to do while we were waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. We'd repair what he fried.
