Thanks for the heads up,
But,
The last program in the world I'd ever use on my PC, that is, any PC of mine,
is I.E. anything. You just get what you deserve when you use the worse browser in the world.
M$ has been patching that beast for the past fifteen years, trying to patch the security holes and they don't have it fixed yet, so anyone who uses it, gets exactly what they deserve.
So, Cowboy, how's everything else in Texas? You doing OK?
The wife and Kids OK?
Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

| I've been having "slowdown of browser" problems ever since I went to I.E.8. Switched back to 7, and didn't help. I've been back and forth with Microsuck for two months now, with no success. Today, after all the updates installed (except .net Framework), my system (Win XP pro) started working normally!!! Since I use F.F., I don't know if I have the I.E problem or not - and like Doc, I don't care! |

well i said along time ago if they ever got rid of the reason i was using ie i would stop using it. they have in windows 7 got rid of the reason i was using it. but there are still people out there doing things for the reason if people with ie want to see them on the web. so i guess i'll have to say until there is no more reasons on the web for me to use it i'll stop.
ain't married doc. and no kids. so i'm fine. got lots of rain here last night and again going to get more today.
so the yard is growing.
as for using fire fox. i got it here but i don't use it unless maxton or ie can't get online then i'll try firefox to see if it will. but i don't like it cause every one else rants and raves how good it is. theres got to be something wrong with it in that case?.
every one rants and raves how bad ie. is and it is not as bad as they say it is only a few bad updates now and then for me. like 3 in the last two years.? it is really fast here on this xp pro sp3 with .net framework installed. and directx updated to last version. only thing is this button thing now. and the fact it does not always load the home page when it starts up? and the free download manager has trouble with monitoring downloads through ie 8. they are working on that though.
sure microsoft has bad codes sometimes. but with the third party programs you can get those blocked up. i just don't like the fact they are trying to make us all use online applications i wont do that. they are trying to make us keep our email address's for our pop3 account on the ms messager server and i wont do that so i have to keep importing the addresses when i want to email some one or keep a letter from them i can reply too. if it gets too bad i'll use another email client then msn's live mail.
but i'll keep using ie 8 just wanted to let you know about the button error and maybe any ms programmer that might read this message. |

From zlims' link
| Quote: |
Gumblar definitely makes Web surfing with Internet Explorer more hazardous. If your PC is infected, merely searching in Google for seemingly innocent topics can lead you to a site you never intended to visit.
Google's Niels Provos recommends in his Top 10 Malware Sites blog that people use Firefox, Chrome, or another browser that taps into Google's Safe Browsing API. The API blocks Web destinations on Google's list of potentially dangerous sites, which the company claims to update continuously.
Here are some additional ways you can protect yourself:
* Make a full system backup. Create a backup of your PC using drive-imaging software such as the $50 Acronis True Image Home. (A 15-day free trial can be downloaded from the Acronis site.) Be ready to roll back to a prior image should your PC become infected.
* Use Windows SteadyState. This free program "freezes" a machine, preventing changes that could be harmful. For more information and a download link, visit the product page on Microsoft's site. (Windows Genuine Advantage validation is required for the download.)
* Browse in a sandbox. WS senior editor Ian "Gizmo" Richards described free sandbox programs in an Oct. 16, 2008, article. A sandbox lets you open suspicious links without putting your system's security at risk.
* Don't use Internet Explorer. All versions of IE are vulnerable to Gumblar and similar Web threats, but especially IE 6 is an infection waiting to happen. If a site or application requires Internet Explorer, update to IE 8 if you can. If you can't, download IE 7 as a bare minimum (although it's by no means a remedy). You can download IE 7 from Microsoft's Download Center and IE 8 from the browser's page on Microsoft's site.

On this PC, I've got Windows XP.... and I Always use firefox.
Except for when i click on "update windows" in the "Start" column. Because with Firefox, the windows update site wants IE.
I deplore having to use IE under any circumstances....... is there something I'm missing re Having to Use IE to update windows??? |

There is a FF adon so it appears as IE.
I don't remember the name because I didn't install it. I, too, fire up IE only when I need to update windosw. |

Zlim,
I'm running Windows XP, Pro, SP3 here on my main system.
I.E. is still at level 6 and I absolutely WILL NOT let Microshaft update it to any later version. Version 7 trashed my Outlook Express so I uninstalled it and now it's permanently BLOCKED from ever downloading again.
I.E. Tab is the add-on you're thinking of.
here's the link to it:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
That link given above by zlim and repeated by Ken, is to an article in the latest "Windows Secrets" newsletter.
I read it with great interest when it arrived in my email box a few days ago.
That link comes up just fine in my Fire Fox browser. I'm also testing the new FF 3.5 beta and it too is working just fine.
When installing the I.E.Tab add-on to Firefox, I always do the install of FF from the latest version download file; Then I install both Flash Player and Shockwave and then the I.E. Tab add-on.
Then I go into View,> Toolbars,> Customize and scroll to the bottom of the window.
Then grab the IE Tab icon and drag it up to your toolbar and drop it next to the little Yellow House (HOME) icon.
Now whenever you want FF to emulate I.E., just click the little IE Tab icon.
It don't get NO simpler than that.
Once in I.E. mode, you can even do your MS Updates or go to other sites that are written for I.E.
I like things that WORK and are simple and easy to use.
With that in mind, I find Firefox very much to my liking.
Cheers Mates!

Good to hear that Firefox 3.5 beta is working fine.
After reading that"Windows Secrets" newsletter I decided to check the file sqlsodbc.chm
with the free FileAlyzer 2 tool,
after following instructions,
I found that file had not changed from the time I bought this computer,
and it had no infections.

okay when searching for help with this error i found a page that had a post that stated.
" Is the forward back button menu going to be turned on by default in IE 8 "
i went to that page but could not find the post.
but this leads me to believe they turned off the menu in the last update cause the buttons still do work for back and forward. but menu button won't show a menu and i use that all the time.
so can anyone here tell me how to turn that menu back on.?

I am not certain what you want.
Is it in any of this
The box on the right was accessed by right clicking on the top bars. |

no thats the customize menu you get by right clicking on the menu bar.
see the back and forward or the next and previous buttons which ever you wish to call them in the upper left of your image, the little arrow next to them for the menu of recent pages viewed does not work that is what i'm trying to get working and i believe they have turned it off in ie 8. unless i'm just missing some runtime file that is used to open it i don't know what else it could be? |

| i just went into ie8 and went to a couple of different sites. then i tried to click that down arrow, it opened for me. the only thing i can think of is you might have disabled it someway by accident or you may have a piece of software that is causing the problem. i agree that you should port your favorites to firefox and forget internet explorer. ff is far faster than ie. it is also far more customizable than ie. either way good luck with figuring out the problem. DrWho, I'm with you as far as IE. I can't install IE 7 in windows 2000 and as of Tuesday, MS is still patching it. I do install the patches, even though I don't fire up IE, except to update.
On my XP SP3 computers, I still have IE 6 also. I removed IE 7 by checking DO NOT show this as an update. Of course the update site complains that I have hidden items, blah, blah, blah. I was offered IE 8 on Thursday so I chose to hide that too. I rarely even surf in windows.
I found a tool, 8MB in size that will remove IE 7 and get you back to v 6. I just haven't decided where I want to upload it to store it. |

I have just opened IE 8 and found my little arrow not working either.
But if I view a number of pages in the same tab it works.
It will show recent pages in the tab, and each tab has it's own list. |

just found this error is caused by this.
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-019 - Critical
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (969897)
Published: June 9, 2009 | Updated: June 10, 2009
how did i find that out? simple i used the ie8 install exe i had downloaded
to my computer reinstalled ie 8 it took out the previous version of ie.
rebooted the computer reinstalled ie 8, rebooted the computer, i came online. went a couple places in the same tab. and the button for the recently view pages menu worked.
then it downloaded the with the auto update the needed updates.
so i told it to install them since it was only this one and the windows defender update.
the defender up date did not change anything with ie 8 so it was not the error. but when i got back online after the reboot from installing the updates. i again tried the different sites and all in the same tab. the recently viewed pages menu does not work again.
FIX YOUR CRAPPY UP DATE MS.
my system is Xp Pro Sp3. |

FWIW......
When IE 7 installs over IE 6, it's listed in the Add/Remove app in the control panel.
It's then easy to DE-Install IE7, which leaves IE 6 back in control again.
Windows handles that and NO external program is necessary.
I was so sick and tired of I.E. anything, like all those thousands of users who ran Netscape for years, so when Firefox came along, even in Beta, I jumped on it like a goose on a Junebug.
It wasn't too long till I removed the big blue "e" from my desktop.
The I.E. Tab add-on in FF eliminates the need for actually running I.E.
OH, it's still on the HD somewhere. I just don't need or use it.
Since day one, Firefox has been FREE, open source and a work in progress.
(I have the latest Beta of 3.5 and it works great. )
Also I received the latest update of FF to build 3.0.11 just this morning.
I have the FF updater set to Automatic, so getting the latest build is no big deal.
I did go to FF's download site and I downloaded the full install of 3.0.11 so I can have it on my Utilities CD to share with my customers.
I actually find very few people who are not already running FF, from a business man or computer geek to little Granny Whipple.
My hardest job is keeping all of my own 8 computers updated.
Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?
